MSNBC’s Joy Reid accused the “cult-like” supporters of President Donald Trump of worshiping money and once again injected racism in her on-air remarks.
Reid set up former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke for the insulting comments about the president and Americans who support him during MSNBC’s “AM Joy” on Sunday.

“There have been many people who pointed out on this show, and just in conversations that I’ve had with people who follow this kind of thing, that there is something cult-like about this movement that follows Donald Trump,” Reid declared, before making an even more outrageous claim.
“But there is also something about it that worships money. That worships the money that is made off of, in large part, low-income work that then produces very high income,” she said, using Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick as her example.
“I wonder if in your state there is a countervailing force that can fight for — I mean, you’re doing it — but is there a strong enough countervailing force that can fight for the low-income black and brown larger workers that are the ones who would die if the state were to reopen,” Reid asked O’Rourke who easily took up the narrative.
The former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate thanked Reid for the question and proceeded to call the Republican lieutenant governor “nuts” and referred to the president as “crazy” for “calling for insurrection in a number of states.”
O’Rourke accused Trump of “inspiring people to show up in battle gear and with weapons of war like AR-15’s and AK47’s.”
“You’ve got people who are stepping up into the breach of failed leadership and are distinguishing themselves,” he continued, citing examples like Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, the “first leader in our state to issue a mandatory stay at home order.”
“Politically unpopular, but very necessary to save the lives that you and I are talking about right now,” O’Rourke claimed.
He also cited the “very strict public health orders” issued by Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who came under heavy fire last week after enacting a mandatory face mask order along with fines for violators and earned a scathing response from the police union for her “draconian” order.

“So there are people who are stepping up to make sure that we do the right thing at this moment of truth, this great test for our country, and try to save those who are the most vulnerable among us, most likely to contract coronavirus and to die from it,” O’Rourke told Reid.
“So I find my hope and optimism in those who step up, those in positions of public trust like those that I named. But also the healthcare workers, the folks who are volunteering at the food banks, where we’re seeing lines that stretch two, three miles long to pick up food,” he added.
“This is a crisis of extraordinary proportions and yet people are stepping up to lead despite Donald Trump, despite Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, despite (Texas Gov.) Greg Abbott, despite our twice indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton who wants to have in-person voting despite what we have learned about — from Wisconsin, where more than four dozen people we know of for sure have been sick from having to vote in person,” O’Rourke went on.
In fact, a study released last week found that Wisconsin’s in-person presidential primary earlier this month apparently did not create a spike in coronavirus infections despite the warnings and condemnation from critics. Even with a few new confirmed cases of the virus that may have been connected to the election, the state’s infection rate actually dropped following the day at the polls.
