Networks denounce Trump’s ‘hardline’ immigration order as racist ‘dog whistle’ for his base

If there’s one thing the media places nearly as much importance on as undermining President Donald Trump, it would be attacking the president’s base.

The latest example of this was seen this week from the major broadcast networks in response to Trump announcing he’ll sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes amid reports that in the first four weeks since a national emergency was declared, 22 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits.

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

Just as he was attacked by Democrats after banning travel from China, Trump was immediately accused by the opposition party of being “xenophobic.”

But their media allies took a somewhat different angle.

“All three of the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) were in harmony as the liberal choir sang a song decrying the ‘hardline’ policy as just a racist ‘dog whistle’ for his base,” Media Research Center’s Newsbusters reported.

Which is to suggest that the 62.9 million Americans who elected Trump are a bunch of racists.

ABC White House correspondent Cecilia Vega was cited as one example of the media hyperventilating over the move, as the reporter declared the “hardline” policy is “sure to end up in the courts.”

“There are strict orders already in place,” Vega reported on World News Tonight. “But even a temporary pause would be unprecedented in this country.”

The journalist also scoffed at the suggestion that immigrants could bring coronavirus with them as they travel to the U.S.

“But you heard the President say, this is about protecting American jobs. He also said this is about protecting Americans from the coronavirus,” she said. “But David, we’ve got to tell you, America has more confirmed coronavirus cases than anywhere else in the world. We should also note, that the number of immigrants on the front lines in this fight right now, 1 in 4 doctors, 1 in 3 nurses are immigrants.”

The U.S. is doing more testing than any other country, which drives up the number of confirmed cases — a fact that is conveniently minimized by the agenda-driven press.

Here’s more from MRC on coverage from CBS and NBC:

Over on the CBS Evening News, White House correspondent Paula Reid wrote off the prospective order as just “a move that will likely appeal to his base,” and added that “the immigration process has effectively been shut down for the past month after key offices closed because of coronavirus.”

For NBC Nightly News’s part, correspondent Geoff Bennett echoed Reid’s second point and appeared to take an underhanded swipe at the President’s supporters. “Critics say it’s a political dog whistle aimed at energizing the President’s base,” he proclaimed to anchor Lester Holt.

In the run-up to the November election, one might think liberals learned their lesson in 2016 when standard-bearer Hillary Clinton’s use of the word “deplorables” blew up in her face, as she described Trump’s supporters. Yet, as is seen here, that’s clearly not the case.
