The U.S. government is reportedly investigating whether the novel coronavirus was released from a Chinese lab — the COVID-19 outbreak originated in the city of Wuhan, home to some of China’s top research laboratories.
While there are some doubts that the virus was a bioweapon, Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs asked the very relevant question on Thursday’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” of how the U.S. responds if it turns out that it was an intentional act.
Quest panelist KT McFarland, who served as Deputy National Security Advisor under Michael Flynn for the first four months of the Trump administration, insisted the U.S. needs to “send a strong message to the Chinese.”
“They think they are going to come out of this crisis and they’re going to be on top,” she said.

“If this turns out to be a biological weapon, K.T., if this happens to be a conscious and overt act on the part of the Chinese military — and we know that biological warfare is part of their military doctrine, a significant part, just as cyber warfare or any other — if this were to turn out to be that, what should be the response?” Dobbs asked. “Because I’m not interested in two and three-year programs … This country is not operating in the 21st century if we think we have time to retool, reposition, repurpose. We have to have an answer now.”
“If China has unleashed chemical biological warfare on the world, not only the United States, but the world, then I think it’s the beginning of a new Cold War which they’ve started,” McFarland said. “The United States needs to stand up to the Chinese economically, diplomatically, militarily, in cyberspace and in covert operations.”
Dobbs countered by asking how great the toll on the U.S. must be before we got to war, which prompted the liberal media to say he “floated the prospect of war with China.”
“If we don’t go to war over the loss of 31,000 American lives … what do we go to war over?” Dobbs asked. “When do we quit sending strong letters and talking tough? At what point are there consequences for this kind of behavior? Because whether they did it intentionally or not, we do know this: That virus was unleashed on the world, and they lied, and that is the same as making it an intentional and conscious act of warfare, as far as I’m concerned.”
McFarland responded by saying she didn’t “want to go to war with anybody,” which prompted Dobbs to interject, “Neither do I.”
“Economic warfare is where you start,” McFarland added. “And we immediately start decoupling, particularly, our technology sectors from the Chinese and bring it down hard on economic and technology transfer. Not someday in the future, but tomorrow.”
