Conservative commentator Jesse Kelly unpacked an extensive reality check for America’s politicians about the effects of their coronavirus responses.
The radio show host and Iraq War veteran addressed the nation’s leaders in a lengthy series of tweets Friday, calling them out on their ignorance of the price small business owners will be paying in the wake of widespread shutdowns due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
“As of this moment the public is scared and they’re letting you shut America down. However, we’re about to have unemployment claims in the MILLIONS and their fear is gonna turn to anger. Anger at YOU,” Kelly tweeted Friday, adding that they need to “let America get back to work.”
Dear Politicians,
As of this moment the public is scared and they’re letting you shut America down. However, we’re about to have unemployment claims in the MILLIONS and their fear is gonna turn to anger. Anger at YOU.
Let America get back to work. And I mean REALLY soon. https://t.co/JRzIx8pUVo

“You cannot shut this country down without HUGE consequences,” the former Republican congressional candidate continued, arguing that the proposal to give $1,000 checks to American adults to alleviate the effects of the health crisis on the economy won’t even “make a DENT in the public anger that’s about to rise.”
All the $1000 government checks in the world won’t even make a DENT in the public anger that’s about to rise and I’m shocked more people cannot see this. Shocked. 20-30% unemployment is coming. And coming very soon. You cannot shut this country down without HUGE consequences.

Kelly warned of a coming 30% unemployment rate that will be a direct result and will become the full responsibility of lawmakers who are currently making drastic decisions. Acknowledging that his reality check would not be popular, the former combat veteran Marine suggested, “you can feel free to call your mommy if you want soothing words.”
I know this won’t be popular, but you can feel free to call your mommy if you want soothing words.
The American people are not scared of ANY disease badly enough to wipe out their lives. Find a way to fight China Virus with us working again, or pay the price.
That’s all.

Reacting to reports of more mandatory closures of businesses, Kelly noted in another tweet that it is “insanely myopic” to act “as if depressions don’t have casualties.” He also warned that the clock is ticking and “people are gonna start going back to work,” reacting to the latest remarks from Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who said Friday that Americans will need to stay home for at least several more weeks.
Well you’ve got about another week I’d guess. Maybe two at the most. Then people are gonna start going back to work BECAUSE YOU CANNOT JUST SHUT DOWN THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. https://t.co/gudJI7oYOZ

More states and cities took drastic steps this week to combat the spread of coronavirus which has seen over 19,000 confirmed cases in the U.S. and more than 250 deaths. California became the first state to issue a shelter-in-place order and Illinois soon followed with a similar order. New York’s Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered nearly 100 percent of New York’s workforce to stay home and many were calling for President Trump to declare a national shutdown as well.
An Illinois pizza restaurant owner made headlines this week after telling Governor J.B. Pritzker “screw you” in response to an order for businesses to only remain open for takeout and delivery orders.
“I marvel at how people talk about these shutdowns. Literally marvel at it. My jaw hangs open,” Kelly tweeted in response to the discussions about the mandatory closure of businesses.
I marvel at how people talk about these shutdowns. Literally marvel at it. My jaw hangs open.
“Just close the doors of your steel mill until mid-April. Then we’ll let you know. No big deal.”
America needs fewer college degrees and a lot more real world experience. A LOT more. https://t.co/OBs4p96vKR

Kelly went on to share a story about a small business in his area who could lose everything.
Let me tell you a little story about 91 men and women in my area. 91 people with bills, families, and all the things you have:
Just hung up the phone with my buddy who owns a company. It’s a retail company selling fairly expensive things most of you own…
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) March 20, 2020
Now understand this. His company is one of those budding superstar companies. The kind opening new locations. The kind that could go public and put my buddy on a yacht the rest of his life…
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) March 20, 2020
“They are in ROCK solid financial shape,” Kelly went on in the Twitter thread, but warned that the current decisions being made by government leaders will lead to the end of this business.
Guess how long he has until they close at this current rate of business.
One month. One month. Businesses, no matter how solid, CANNOT drop to zero revenue. They cannot. Business expenses are just too much. They’ll crush you…
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) March 20, 2020
So back to those 91 employees. Those are all his. Their clock started ticking a few days ago. (And many employees across America already had their clock run out.)
91 families about to be destitute if we don’t open America again. And that’s from a solid company.
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) March 20, 2020
Kelly issued a final warning that “a Great Depression is coming. And it’s coming fast.”
Politicians,
Open this country up again. And soon. If someone tells you locking everyone inside is the only way, fire them and find someone else. Not a recession, but
That’s all.
