CNN blasted for disgraceful article claiming Trump is ‘peddling unsubstantiated hope’

CNN proved once again that President Trump is on the mark with his attacks on the network’s journalistic credibility.

A so-called “analysis” piece claiming Trump was peddling “unsubstantiated hope” amid the coronavirus crisis was torched for its “absolute garbage” of an excuse to be journalism.

CNN politics reporter Stephen Collinson panned the optimism of the nation’s leader in the face of the global pandemic that has infected over 19,000 Americans and claimed the lives of 260. In his article titled “Trump peddles unsubstantiated hope in dark times,” Collinson accused the president of “adopting the audacity of false hope.”

“For the past two days, Trump has said he is dispensing ‘game-changer’ breakthroughs on treatments and a wartime-style effort to mass-produce medical supplies that appear as rays of light amid America’s darkening battle against the coronavirus pandemic. His eagerness for remedies no doubt reflects a sincere desire to deliver Americans from the nightmare of lockdowns, fear for loved ones and atmosphere of national trauma,” he began.

“But it is also becoming clear that the President’s rhetoric is part of an emerging political strategy,” Collinson claimed.

“He can’t hold the campaign rallies that are his political lifeblood any more — so he’s just moved them into the White House briefing room,” he wrote. “Big footing Vice President Mike Pence’s sober, informative task force briefings, Trump exaggerates facts, bashes China, blames the Obama administration, lauds his once soaring economy and baits reporters while shoveling any blame away from himself.”

Collinson almost hated to acknowledge that “as a political exercise alone, the president’s high-visibility strategy appears to be working so far,” citing a new ABC News poll that showed a 55 percent approval rating for the president’s handling of the health emergency.

The CNN reporter went on to claim the administration is “trying to get everyone to look the other way” and “holding out the promise of hope and optimism to shift attention from the reality.”

As a bonus, and continuing with the liberal media’s ongoing narrative, Collinson went on to carry water for the Chinese government in his criticism of the president.

“The administration’s emerging political strategy to evade blame is also evident in a coordinated White House and conservative media effort to saddle China with all the blame for the pandemic,” he wrote.

“Is he most dedicated to the national interest and reflecting the true state of the crisis or his own political vitality?” Collinson asked.

Of course, there has been no criticism from liberals over New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s optimism over an anti-malaria drug that could successfully combat COVID-19.

“I’m an optimist,” Cuomo told Sean Hannity in a radio interview on Friday. “I’m hopeful about the drugs and that’s why we’ll try it here in New York as soon as we get it.”

Critics eviscerated Collinson for pushing his anti-Trump agenda amid a crisis and for “fact-checking hope.”

“WTF is this?” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck tweeted. “[Trump] could respond to this garbage @CNNPolitics piece by saying at tomorrow’s briefing that ‘we’re all gonna die’ and @CNN would react by saying ‘Trump peddles unsubstantiated fear’ or something to that degree.”

“We’re fact checking hope now,” conservative commentator Stephen Miller wrote in a tweet.

“CNN is a cancer on American politics,” the Federalist’s Sean Davis tweeted.

“It seems like a lot of people would love a middle ground in the media between ‘there’s nothing to fear’ and ‘your hope is unsubstantiated in these dark times,'” National Republican Senatorial Committee senior adviser Matt Whitlock said in a tweet.

“CNN would be totally okay with thousands of people getting sick and millions more losing their jobs in a recession if it meant Donald Trump’s approval rating would drop,” The Daily Caller’s Greg Price tweeted.
