For four brief seconds late Tuesday evening, the world stood still in shocked silence after CNN, “the most trusted name in news,” falsely declared Sen. Bernie Sanders the winner of the Mississippi Democrat presidential primary race.
“We have our first projection of the night … Bernie Sanders,” CNN host Wolf Blitzer announced as Sanders’ name briefly popped up on screen before disappearing.
“Not, not happening right now,” he quickly added as the on-screen graphic switched from Sanders to front-runner candidate Joe Biden.
“Joe Biden is the winner of the Mississippi primary. Joe Biden carries Mississippi primary. Joe Biden carries Mississippi. There we have it right there. You can see it.”
As he spoke, the graphics switched again.

“Oh, maybe you can’t see it,” he continued. “We’ll fix that technical problem. But the most important thing is this: Joe Biden is the winner in Mississippi.”
No, Wolf, the most important thing is this: CNN is “the most trusted name in news.”

The mistake nearly caused some Biden backers to have a heart attack (not literally, of course).

Of course, it wouldn’t have necessarily made much of a difference had Sanders won Mississippi, given as Biden wound up taking Michigan and its whopping 125 delegates.
“Michigan, where Sanders upset Hillary Clinton in 2016, was the night’s biggest prize, awarding 125 of the night’s 352 delegates,” Time Magazine reported.
“With about half of all precincts reporting, Biden was on track to capture the state by double-digits, padding his lead in delegates to the party’s nominating convention in July in Milwaukee and dealing a blow to Sanders’ claims of strength in the Rust Belt—and his fading hopes of overtaking the former Vice President for the nomination.”
The report was titled, “Joe Biden’s Win in Michigan Gives Him a Clear Path to the Democratic Nomination.”
It’s over for Sanders, and it seems no amount of accidental fake news can change that.
As for the general election, there’s no clear leader yet. Biden won half of the general election polls published Monday, while President Donald Trump won the other half:
