Senator Ted Cruz self-quarantines after meeting coronavirus-stricken CPAC attendee

Two members of Congress are “officially” self-quarantining after having close contact with a person at CPAC 2020 who now has coronavirus, including Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona.

Cruz announced that on Saturday he learned of the diagnosis of the person who is now under medical care in New Jersey.

“I’m not experiencing any symptoms, and I feel fine and healthy,” Cruz wrote. “Given that the interaction was 10 days ago, that the average incubation period is 5-6 days, that the interaction was for less than a minute, and that I have no current symptoms, the medical authorities have advised me that the odds of transmission from the other individual to me were extremely low.”

The senator continued, “Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, and because of how frequently I interact with my constituents as a part of my job and to give everyone peace of mind, I have decided to remain at my home in Texas this week, until a full 14 days have passed since the CPAC interaction.”

“Everyone should continue to treat this outbreak seriously and be driven by facts and medical science,” Cruz added.

Also on Sunday, Rep. Gosar announced that he and three members of his senior staff “are officially under self-quarantine after sustained contact at CPAC with a person who has since been hospitalized with the Wuhan Virus.”

“My office will be closed for the week,” he added in his tweets. “We are all asymptomatic and feel great. But we are being proactive and cautious. Keep the person in the hospital in your prayers. We are in touch with the CDC and the White House. They are doing a great job staying on top of this.”

As was announced this weekend by the conference’s host organization, the American Conservative Union, the person who attended CPAC had been exposed to the coronavirus before attending the event in Maryland. After interacting with several people at CPAC, the individual tested positive for COVID-19 and has been placed in quarantine in New Jersey.

The patient did not have any contact with President Trump, but he did interact with ACU chairman Matt Schlapp. Schlapp said he himself later shook the president’s hand.

On Sunday, Schlapp was interviewed on “Fox & Friends” and he said that attendees were making full use of hand sanitizer dispensers at the conference, to include himself and the president. “Everybody was scrubbing down all the time,” he said.

The patient “didn’t spend a lot of time going all over the conference,” Schlapp stated. “He stayed more in a small area.”

The ACU chair admitted that “I had incidental contact with him, very briefly.”

“Anybody I know that might have had contact with the patient, if I can verify it, believe me, I have called that person,” said Schlapp. “Just in abundance of caution, which I think is the right thing to do, to be transparent as we possibly can. I want to reiterate, nobody who was at the conference should panic about what happened. We’re going to take all the necessary steps.”

“I feel healthy as a horse,” Schlapp concluded, adding that he and his family are talking to their doctors and taking precautions.
