While “trailer trash” may be a harsh assessment, one thing is clear, Meghan Markle continues to be a lightning rod for controversy.
Since marrying Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex has turned the royal family on its head as the couple recently announced they would be stepping back from some of their royal duties and are looking to split their time between the United Kingdom and North America.
Markle is not too well thought of across the pond, but here in post-Obama America, where the former B-list actress accused of social climbing is propped up by the liberal elite as a beacon calling attention to the inherent racism they are so fully invested in — true or not — it’s a whole other story.
This being something journalist Victoria Mather found out the hard way, when she appeared on MSNBC over the weekend to suggest Markle has been “disrespectful” to the royal family and its protocol, saying that “many people” consider her to be “five clicks up from trailer trash.”
“I think what has really, really upset the British public is that Meghan Markle, who many people consider as only, you know, five clicks up from trailer trash, has actually tried to disrespect the queen,” she said.
“And the queen is the most respected person, most respected woman in the world,” Mather continued.
MSNBC anchor Lindsey Reiser would quickly end the interview after the remark.
Mathers was identified as a “Vanity Fair Royals Watcher,” according to Buzzfeed, but has reportedly not been employed there since 2018, opening her up for more criticism for not offering a correction.
As far as the left in America is concerned, a Trump-hating liberal celebrity outranks a member of the British royal family — sources have said Markle is looking to eventually move to Los Angeles, but only after President Trump is out of office — and Mather’s harsh assessment just won’t do.
An assessment she has made before, as BuzzFeed noted that as Air Mail’s “chief travel correspondent,” Mathers used the term “trailer trash” in reference to Markle in a September article about a reported feud with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, who is married to Prince Williams, second in line to become the next king of England.
(Prince Harry is sixth in line and his chances of ever becoming king are remote.)
“Catherine comes from a stable, close-knit family,” she wrote. “Meghan comes from a sadly dysfunctional family, leading to her being unpleasantly trolled as trailer trash.”
Naturally, any criticism of Markle is racism — just ask social media. The irony being that in the U.S., the term “trailer trash” is more often associated with rednecks.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:

Shame @MSNBC. My professors at @mujschool are shaking their heads. You can’t just sit there and let people spout racist ideas. Megan graduated from private schools and has a double degree from @NorthwesternU. Trailer trash … huh?

Thank u for posting this! I watched it live in disgust! @LindseyReiser ended the interview BUT SHE SAID NOTHING TO CORRECT THOSE RACIST/MISOGYNISTIC REMARKS! A truly shameful moment on @MSNBC! #Racism #Misogyny #DoBetter #MSNBCLive

I’m glad Lindsey cut her off but the fact that another racist, British correspondent is speaking on Duchess Meghan is appalling. @MSNBC stop hiring these people to speak. They know nothing but hatred and we will not tolerate that!

This was one of the most disgusting interviewees I’ve ever heard. Love to Meghan and Harry ❤️

You owe your audience and Meghan Markle a sincere apology for even allowing Victoria Mather on your show to offer her racist tirade.@VanityFair … she needs to be fired.

Really @MSNBC, you allow @mather_victoria from @VanityFair, on the weekend of Int’l Women’s day, to call the Duchess of Sussex “5 steps from trailer trash?” Unbelievable, unacceptable & absolutely racist. Do BETTER!

@MSNBC should be ashamed for that interview allowing Victoria Mather to disrespect the Duchess of Sussex like that. What a weak anchor to not even rebutt the nasty words and defend Meghan Markle’s success which is far from trailer trash. Disgusting.
