Charlie Kirk shreds Romney: His party protects old-guard ‘ruling class’, a party that lacks conviction to ‘fight’

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk slammed Sen. Mitt Romney during his CPAC speech and told the crowd their boos were the “correct answer” to hearing his name.

The founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA was speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday when he mentioned the Utah lawmaker, calling him out for being the only Republican to vote “guilty” on one of the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

“President Donald Trump has empowered a resurgence of conservatism on college campuses across the country. The exact opposite of what the media want you to believe,” Kirk told the crowd gathered at the Gaylord National Resort & Conference Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

“I’ll tell you why: The Republican Party of Mitt Romney – ” Kirk began as the audience erupted into boos.

“Correct answer by the way. Correct. Every time his name is mentioned you should respond that way,” he said. “Because he lied to every single person in this room that knocked on doors for him, that made phone calls for him, that donated to his campaign. Because we thought that he was going to be a crusader against the Marxist president that preceded Donald Trump.”

In a floor speech before his impeachment vote last month, Romney said the president was “guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust,” as he declared his prayerfully made decision.

The former governor of Massachusetts became the first senator in U.S. history to vote to convict a president of his own party, earning damning rebukes from conservatives and praise from Democrats and liberals who lauded his “courageous” stand after years of shredding him over policy, position, and party.

Romney’s sanctimonious defense of his vote, claiming his faith had helped guide his decision, earned a not-so-veiled jab from Trump the next day. And American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp, who presides over CPAC, promptly said Romney was “formally not invited” to the event.

Schlapp later said Romney could attend CPAC as a liberal, because “we won’t credential him as a conservative.”

During his speech Thursday, Kirk blasted the former 2012 GOP presidential nominee who openly criticized Trump who helped him win the election as a Utah senator.

“He asks and he begs for the endorsement of Donald Trump for the Senate in Utah and then he goes and votes for that sham unconstitutional impeachment,” Kirk recounted.

“He embodies the very same political class that President Trump ran against,” he told the CPAC audience. “The party of Mitt Romney was a party that did not fight. It was a party that wanted to preserve the ruling class. It was a party that did not give the next generation competence and courage and conviction to stand for what is correct.”

Many Twitter users heartily agreed with Kirk’s assessment.
