Mark Meadows delivers perfect line about ‘the swamp’ and dishes on why Trump will win 2020 at CPAC

Rep. Mark Meadows believes President Donald Trump will be reelected in November because he has proven to be someone who keeps his promises.

The North Carolina Republican spoke about president and the Washington, D.C. “swamp” he has been fighting during a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday.

Presiding over CPAC 2020, American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp asked Meadows during a panel with Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio about his prediction for the presidential race.

“You lit the match here that you think the president’s going to win,” he said.

“I do, I do,” Meadows affirmed. “Mainly because he’s in the promise-keeping business. He has been keeping his promises.”

The GOP lawmaker explained how Trump is the “only politician that dared to say things that we didn’t even dream of, and then actually go out and do them.”

“People look for someone who’s authentic, and this president is authentic,” Meadows added, saying he is “optimistic” about Trump’s chances.

This year’s conference, being held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, will feature a lineup of speakers Thursday that will include Vice President Mike Pence, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and White House adviser Kellyanne Conway. The president will be delivering the closing address on Saturday.

Meadows also discussed the current efforts by Congress to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, noting how the FBI abused the FISA process to spy on Trump’s 2016 campaign.

“We’re right in the middle of reauthorizing the FISA process,” Meadows said. “Shame on any member of Congress or any senator, including Republicans if we reauthorize it without reforming it.”

Jordan spoke about the “coup” against the president and warned that Democrats will not stop trying to remove him from office.

“They’re never going to stop,” Jordan said during the panel discussion. “Never going to stop. They tried to overturn the will of 63 million Americans—all of us who voted for President Trump. They tried to overturn that.”

“They’re never going to stop, which means our job never stops either,” he continued.

“Defending the truth, defending the Constitution, defending the president,” he said. “If they can do it to a president, imagine what they can do to you and I.”

Meadows, who also delivered the closing remarks at CPAC on Wednesday evening, agreed with Jordan and pointed out the “double standard” in Washington and the “swamp” the president has been fighting since he was elected.

“Republican, Democrat, if they do things wrong, they need to be held accountable,” he said. “But you know, there’s two standards.”

“When you fight the swamp, the swamp fights back and it is time that we have a victory over the swamp,” Meadows said. “So many have been in the swamp so long they think it’s a hot tub.”
