According to openly gay U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the real equal rights activists he’s met across the world are “annoyed” at the pseudo gay activists who inhabit the world of coastal elites and Hollywood bigwigs.
“People around the world who are fighting for equality … they are totally annoyed at the New York, Hollywood, West Hollywood gays who raise a lot of money for black-tie events and aren’t doing a thing to help our brothers and sisters in Lebanon who are getting arrested,” he said recently on classically liberal commentator Dave Rubin’s political talk show.
“Look what happened in Zambia. They literally prosecuted two guys for being gay and the court said, ‘Oh no, we’re doing this because they’re gay.’ They didn’t make up some pedophilia thing.”

The discussion began with Grenell pointing out to Rubin, who’s also openly gay, how the gay rights movement in America has changed radically in the past couple of years. He also explained how the Trump administration has been actively involved in fighting for gay rights around the world, especially in countries where homosexuality is a crime punishable by law, but is either ignored or ridiculed.
“The mantra was tolerance and diversity,” he said of the liberal movement’s past. “We recognized that other people were not going to agree with us, and our whole request — our ask — was just embrace diversity. We know you don’t agree with everything that we stand for, but let’s just be tolerant of each other. Remember, hate is not a family value.
“Now, the entire leadership of the LGBT movement in Washington, D.C., is all about cancel culture and absolutely pushing people out of the argument to say, ‘I don’t even want to be friends with you if you voted for Trump or you’re a gay conservative. I can’t even fathom being friends with you.'”
Indeed. When Chadwick Moore, a then-33-year-old journalist, came out as a gay conservative three years ago, he faced a whirlwind of backlash from the gay community.
Grenell’s point was to note how the focus of the LGBT movement has in recent years switched from simply demanding equal treatment to now tarring and feathering anyone who’s even remotely linked to the mostly Christian conservative right.
As an example, Rubin then brought up an op-ed published four years ago in one of the most well-known LGBT magazines, The Advocate, in which a columnist posited that openly gay billionaire entrepreneur Peter Thiel is “not a gay man” because of his support for then-nominee Trump.
“Because [they think] it’s not who you have sex with or who you love that makes you gay — it’s actually a political way of thinking that makes you gay,” Rubin said.
“Which is why [the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation] has this whole like immigration [agenda] — it’s a movement beyond anything that has to do with gays and lesbians. I think they’re just trying to survive,” Grenell replied.
In other words, because homophobia isn’t a prominent issue anymore in the United States, where one of the top Democrat presidential candidates is an openly gay man, the LGBT movement has had to redefine the terms of what constitutes homophobia.

The discussion then pivoted to the Trump administration’s discounted and dismissed efforts at promoting gay rights abroad.
“I’m spearheading this thing [where] there’s 69 countries that criminalize homosexuality. Ten will kill you for being gay, and we’ve launched a process. We’ve done a whole bunch. We’re trying to stay out of the media in terms of telling them every little thing because the media is pretty hostile to something like this,” the ambassador said.
Rubin was floored by the latter statement.
“The media is pretty hostile to something like decriminalizing [homosexual activities?” he asked in confusion.
“From the Trump administration,” Grenell replied.
The premise is that because of Trump Derangement Syndrome, the media are unwilling to give credit to the president even when he’s due it in droves.

“But the decriminalization campaign, we’re making so much progress. Granted, this is going to be a long fight trying convince 69 countries to do a change in domestic laws to not criminalize homosexual activity,” the ambassador continued during his discussion with Rubin.
The only problem, he continued, is that he’s been facing opposition from within the State Department.
“Right now I have to face at the State Department resistance from people who don’t want Americans or Westerners to go into other countries and take a stand for the decriminalization campaign because literally there are countries that believe that the West and specifically America have imported into their country being gay,” he said.
To be clear, this opposition appears to be more rooted in a desire for appeasement versus a desire to stymie the president’s agenda.
