House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy believes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi purposefully withheld President Donald Trump’s articles of impeachment from the Senate to rig the 2020 Democrat primary elections against Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Speaking on “Sunday Morning Futures,” he even offered evidence to back this theory.
“Remember what happened in the last nomination process, where the DNC chairman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, had to resign the night before the nomination convention started because they had found out that they had cheated Sen. Bernie Sanders from the opportunity to become the nominee,” he said to host Maria Bartiromo.
According to McCarthy, Democrats are attempting to do “the exact same thing right now.”

“The Iowa Caucus is on Feb. 3,” he explained. “Bernie Sanders is in first place. And what this does is, this benefits Joe Biden. This harms Sen. Sanders, who’s in first place and could become their nominee, because he will be stuck in a chair because Nancy Pelosi held the papers different than what she said to the American people why she had to move so urgently.”
According to polling averages maintained by RealClearPolitics, Sanders isn’t technically the front-runner. But some have argued that he’s the ostensible front-runner because of his strong performance in Iowa, as well as his impressive fundraising.

Nevertheless, the actual front-runner is Joe Biden.
Bartiromo responded to McCarthy’s theory by noting that such behavior could be classified as collusion and obstruction, ironically enough.
“So you think that it’s by design, that Nancy Pelosi is sending the articles now — really slow-walking the impeachment trial — to have those senators in the room,” she said.
“I mean, that’s collusion, that’s obstruction, once again keeping Bernie Sanders at bay and clearing the decks for Joe Biden.”
Indeed it would be.
Note how she used the word “senators,” not “senator.” As of Jan. 12, there were five senators running for president, including Sanders. Once Pelosi transmits the articles of impeachment, each of these five will be required to take a break from the campaign trail to fulfill their duties as U.S. senators during the president’s trial.
McCarthy continued by noting how the Democrat Party was forced after the 2016 election to change how it doles out superdelegates.
“They removed the superdelegates from the first round of voting because what they had done to Sen. Sanders,” he said. “Now they don’t have that power had he got to the convention fairly. So what power does the speaker have?”
The power of impeachment, which she and her colleagues have exploited to the fullest to try and hurt the president and, it would appear, Sen. Sanders.
“Remember, when she first started impeachment, I sent her a letter about process,” McCarthy explained. “Could we have a fair process, laying out ten questions, exact same process we had for Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon? She ignored that and didn’t care about process.”

“Now she tries in hypocrisy to bring up process in the Senate, where she has no power,” he added.
And she’s been using this dubious concern about the process in the Senate to withhold articles of impeachment that she’d previously claimed were of urgent concern.
“She told the American people it was urgent, she had to move so fast,” the minority leader concluded. “The only reason that she’s doing this that nobody’s talking about is it’s harming Bernie Sanders, the senator who is coming into first place, who could win Iowa and propel himself to be the nominee. It’s the exact same thing they did to him four years ago.”
While some on the far-left have already rushed to portray McCarthy’s theory as a “conspiracy theory,” others have also pointed out that her delay could wind up hurting the senators who’re running in the 2020 race:

Don’t rule out that the reason Pelosi hasn’t sent impeachment to the Senate is to hurt Warren and Sanders, and to help Biden. She knows she has no leverage over Sen. McConnell, but by timing the trial so it takes place during the Iowa lead-up, she has leverage over the liberals.
