Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar rushed to her keyboard to virtue-signal about “values” Friday night after word broke that Texas will no longer resettle refugees in its communities.
Citing “The New Colossus,” the famous sonnet seen on the Statue of Liberty and frequently exploited by left-wing activists, the congresswoman, a refugee herself, made the case that she personally still believes in the “values” outlined by it.
(Never mind that “The New Colossus” was written by a Jewish woman …)
Look:
“With silent lips. ‘Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.’”
These are the words that welcomed me and millions of refugees.

The implicit suggestion was that Texas is a bigoted state that doesn’t care about the “tired,” the “poor,” the “huddled masses,” the “wretched,” etc.
She posted the tweet a couple of hours after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott submitted a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announcing that he intends to use the rights granted to him by an executive order signed by the president last year to opt-out of the department’s Reception and Placement Program for refugees.
The order specifically mandated the State Department obtain “consent” from a state or locality before resettling refugees within it.
In his letter, Abbott wrote that Texas has been “one of the most welcoming states of refugees,” despite already dealing with “disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system,” i.e., illegal immigration.
As a consequence, the state’s resources are already tied up.
“At this time, the state and non-profit organizations have a responsibility to dedicate available resources to those who are already here, including refugees, migrants, and the homeless — indeed, all Texans,” Abbott wrote.
“As a result, Texas cannot consent to initial refugee resettlement for FY2020. This decision does not deny any refugee access to the United States. Nor does it preclude a refugee from later coming to Texas after initially settling in another state.”

But instead of considering all that Abbott had written — particularly his words about the state’s lengthy track record on refugee resettlement (Texas resettled more refugees than any other state between October of 2017 and September of 2018) — Omar, of course, used his decision to paint him and his state as heartless.
The irony is that she’s a prime example of why the number of Americans who support the country’s refugee resettlement program has declined.
Omar is herself a refugee — an ungrateful one, to boot.
During an appearance two years ago on a left-wing podcast, she complained about the allegedly unjust and deplorable conditions she encountered in the states after her family was allowed to immigrate here to escape the Somali Civil War.
She said that during the refugee orientation process, she was shown a video that depicted “happy families, and dinner tables where there is an abundance of food, images of happy young children running off to their school buses … images of a country where people are happy and leading a life that is prosperous.”
But when her family arrived, she discovered that, much like every other country on Earth, America has its own fair share of homeless, particularly in big metropolitans. And that discovery, according to her, means that America is apparently a hellhole.
“I saw panhandlers on the side of the streets, there being trash everywhere, and graffiti on the side of the walls,” she complained. “I remember turning to my father and saying, ‘Well, this doesn’t look like the America you promised!”

Granted, she arrived in 1992, at the tail end of the early 1990s recession. Thanks to the policies of President Donald Trump — a man whom the congresswoman loathes — the country is currently booming economically, not that she’d ever admit as much.
Fox News Tucker Carlson has frequently claimed that, based on her attitude and rhetoric, the Muslim congresswoman is “a symbol of America’s failed immigration system,” as well as “living proof that the way we practice immigration has become dangerous to this country.”
This same sentiment has since begun to reverberate through social media like the booming bass of a drum, all thanks to Omar’s tweet about Texas.

“The New Colossus” was written by Emma Lazarus, and as noted by the latter Twitter user, she was indeed a Jew. And that’s quite ironic given that Omar, a woman who’s now exploiting Lazarus’s work to take shots at Texas, is no friend of the Jews …
