I won’t forgo flying, but I’ll eat more kale? Joaquin Phoenix tells climate changers where he draws line

Actor Joaquin Phoenix was mocked for lecturing about being environmentally conscious while flying to a climate protest in a fuel-guzzling airplane.

The “Joker” actor and Golden Globe Award winner appeared at Jane Fonda’s weekly climate change protest in Washington, D.C., on Friday, telling the crowd that although he “can’t avoid” traveling by plane, he can at least “change my eating habits.”

Though Phoenix has ranted about the impact of dairy and meat production on climate change, recently bringing it up in his Golden Globes acceptance speech, it wasn’t quite clear what “change” he was referring to as he has reportedly been a vegan for years.

“Something I think isn’t oftentimes talked about in the environmental movement or in the conversation about climate change, is that the meat and dairy industry is the third leading cause of climate change,” the 45-year-old actor said at the weekly “Fire Drill Fridays” protest.

“Sometimes we wonder what can we do in this fight against climate change, and there is something that you can do today and tomorrow, by making a choice about what you consume,” Phoenix said.

“I struggle so much with what I can do at times. There are things I can’t avoid. I flew a plane here today, or last night rather,” he added. “But one thing I can do is change my eating habits.”

Phoenix joined the list of his fellow Hollywood liberals who have attended the weekly protests and been arrested after demonstrations blocked streets or Capitol steps. Fonda, who has helped organize the events, has been arrested five times herself for her activism.

During his award speech last week, Phoenix had thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press for “recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change” by serving a totally plant-based menu. He also was apparently hailed as a climate hero by the left for planning to wear the same tuxedo for the entire award season.

The actor’s appeal on Friday was met with a round of mockery on social media where many have had enough of smug Hollywood elites lecturing conservation while they jet-set around in planes, yachts, and limousines.
