Lost in all the outcry from the left over the killing of an Iranian terrorist general who had the blood of hundreds of Americans on his hands, are the policies of appeasement toward the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism by the Obama administration.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, had the temerity to say as much during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” going so far as to say that the missiles Iran fired at Iraqi bases housing American soldiers were paid for by the billions of dollars former President Barack Obama gave to Tehran in 2016.
Appeasement that only served to further empower the regime.
“If you look at Iran policy, I think you’ve seen a dramatic shift,” Cruz said of Trump’s stance toward the Persian Gulf country.
“Under Barack Obama, the policy was appeasement. The policy under the disastrous Iran nuclear deal under Obama was to give over $100 billion to Iran,” he added. “They literally flew $1.7 billion in cash, in unmarked bills on pallets in the dead of night, into Iran — in a very real sense, the missiles that we saw fired on U.S. servicemen and women tonight were paid for by the billions that the Obama administration flooded the ayatollah with.”
“If history teaches anything, it’s don’t give billions of dollars to people who hate you and want to kill you,” Cruz observed.
The senator called Iran an “exceptionally dangerous” nation, and said Quds Force Gen. Qassem Soleimani “was the most dangerous terrorist in the world.”
Despite the offenses seen from Iran, the Republican lawmaker was adamant that we are “not going to get into an extended land war in the Middle East. We’re not going to do it.”
“When you see Democrats and the media lighting their hair on fire and saying we are headed to World War III, this is hysteria driven by the fact that they hate Donald Trump,” Cruz said.
“I commend President Trump for following principles of peace through strength,” he added. “But at the same time, we are not going to be sending our sons and daughters into harm’s way for an extended land battle in the Middle East.”
Cruz noted that the economic sanctions on Iran are having “a real effect.”
“But we need to stand up to the — Ayatollah Khamenei is a radical religious zealot. He hates America,” Cruz said. “He literally chants ‘Death to America’ and he calls Israel the ‘little Satan’ and America the ‘great Satan.’ The way to deal with threats like that is not through weakness, but through strength and we saw that in taking out Soleimani this past week.”
On the topic of nuclear weapons, Cruz said: “the biggest national security threat facing America is the threat of a nuclear Iran.”
“A theocratic lunatic should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons,” he stressed.
