House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of being “unfit for office” Tuesday after reports began to emerge suggesting she wasn’t being earnest with the public.
As Iranian-fired missiles rained down on two Iraqi bases containing U.S. military forces early Tuesday evening, Vice President Mike Pence reportedly attempted to inform Pelosi about the situation, but she initially refused to take the call.
“‘Tell him I’ll call him back,’ she said according to sources in room, noting she had to go open the House for new session,” Politico’s Heather Caygle reported via tweets. “Two minutes later, she was handed note about airbase bombing.”
She finally called back at 6:34 pm:
In meeting tonight Speaker Pelosi was handed a note telling her VP Pence was on the phone.
“Tell him I’ll call him back,” she said according to sources in room, noting she had to go open the House for new session.
Two minutes later, she was handed note about air base bombing.

Pelosi called Pence back at 6:34 pm and he briefed her on Iranian attack, per @Drew_Hammill

What irked Cheney and others was what the speaker chose to do next.
According to Anna Spiegel of Washingtonian magazine, she chose to briefly stop by the opening for the Maialino Mare restaurant in The Yards waterfront development in D.C.:

Soooo she was there for all of 10 minutes and I took a blurry 15th row photo with my iPhone7 (she’s not drinking, she’s gesturing). Thanks for the feedback though!

Almost exactly 15 minutes after Spiegel’s tweet was published, Pelosi finally took to Twitter herself to address Iran’s attack on two Iraqi bases containing U.S. military forces, after which she again went radio silent through the entire evening.
In her tweet, she claimed to be “[c]losely monitoring the situation” and essentially vowed to “ensure the safety of our servicemembers.”
Look:
Closely monitoring the situation following bombings targeting U.S. troops in Iraq. We must ensure the safety of our servicemembers, including ending needless provocations from the Administration and demanding that Iran cease its violence. America & world cannot afford war.

Because of the timing of these posts, some critics, including Cheney, accused the House speaker of being insincere in regard to her concern about what Politico has dubbed “perhaps the biggest international crisis to test [President Donald] Trump yet.”
“Speaker Pelosi is an embarrassment and unfit for office,” Cheney bluntly tweeted.
Others followed suit.

Monitoring the situation in Iraq in between shots of Baciamano Vodka. ???
— Billy Lee (@richarderankin) January 8, 2020
It’s one thing to not have any patriotism. But this is just down right rude and insulting to our service members.

Wow. @ewarren and @JulianCastro is having a fundraiser and @SpeakerPelosi is partying while American soldiers are under attack. @jaketapper are you okay with this?

Hillary slept through Benghazi and you’re drinking through Iran.

Others dinged the speaker for her arguably anti-American statement.
Note how she wrote about “ending needless provocations from the [Trump] Administration.”
The premise was that the administration’s elimination of Iranian military general and terrorist mastermind Qasem Soleimani — a man who’d recently suggested sleeper cells in the United States were ready to strike and kill Americans — was somehow wrong.
Considering also the timing of the tweet — Iran had just struck at least two Iraqi bases containing U.S. military forces — it just seemed “disrespectful” to some.

Get this troubled woman out of Congress. She is disrespectful to the President and working with the enemy.

If there ever was a leader that has spit in the face of Americans it’s Nancy!
NOT ONE member of OUR ADMINISTRATION HAS PROVOKED ANYONE!

When they attacked our embassy the line was crossed! That was considered an act of war so he should handle business and make that damn desert a sheet of glass! #TRUMP2020

Democrats hate America…How else can this tweet be explained. They attacked US Troops!
— Marine03 (@feingold32) January 8, 2020
The Democratic Party now openly side with enemies who are killing Americans, killing our allies, killing civilians, actively pursuing assassination of our president and has vowed to attack the continental United States. Disgusting bunch.

Had American lives been lost because of the Iranian attacks, the criticism would likely be even more scathing. But as it stands, zero causalities were sustained, and the president was slated to address the public sometime Wednesday morning.
All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.
