Comedian and Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais blistered the room full of Hollywood nobility Sunday night at the awards show, getting as many groans and winces as laughs and smiles from the gathered stars.
In rapid-fire succession, Gervais went after Felicity Huffman, James Corden, Judi Dench, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joe Pesci, Meryl Streep and many others to include corporate Hollywood sponsors such as Apple.
At one point, he called the attendees “perverts,” which failed to draw a laugh, and the comedian seemed not to care one bit.
In one remark referring to the series “Afterlife” he explained it “is a show about a man who wants to kill himself … Spoiler alert–season two is on the way so he didn’t kill himself … just like Jeffrey Epstein.”
The audience gasped and moaned, and Gervais followed up, saying: “Shut up. I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care.”
The trolling host was definitely on a roll and no doubt those in the real world who were watching were laughing hysterically.

In a scorching conclusion to the monologue, aimed at every seated rear end in the house, Gervais skewered the “woke” hypocrites who preach to the world about things they are unqualified to talk about, all while make their fortunes working for sponsors with questionable business practices and human rights records … to include Apple, with CEO Tim Cook in the audience who the comedian said uses “sweat shops” to produce their products.
“You say you’re woke,” Gervais said to the big stars, “but the companies you work for are unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney–If ISIS started a streaming service you’d call your agent wouldn’t you?” The glitterati sat stunned, but Gervais was yet to apply his Coup de gras …
“So if you do win an award tonight don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god and then f**k off.”
That wrap was followed by a candid camera shot of Tom Hanks (captured in the image at the top of the page) seemingly in thought about whether he could get up and walk out on the whole thing.
It might have been a real option for a lot of the folks in the room had they taken Gervais’ warning seriously as he opened the show, saying: “I’m Ricky Gervais. Thank you. You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting these awards so I don’t care anymore. I’m joking, I never did. NBC clearly don’t care either, this time.
“So, I mean, Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars because of some offensive tweets … hello? … Let’s go out with a bang let’s have a laugh at your expense, shall we? Remember, they’re just jokes we’re all going to die soon and there’s no sequel.”
