Comedian Eddie Murphy, the prodigal son, returned for the first time in 35 years to host Saturday Night Live over the weekend, a show many insist Murphy saved from the brink in the 1980s.
Reprising many of his memorable characters, like Gumby and Buckwheat, Murphy’s return was a hit, but a bit on disgraced comedian Bill Cosby is getting the most news.
And some major push back from Cosby, via his publicist.
“If you told me 30 years ago that I’d be this boring stay-at-home house dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail, even I wouldn’t have took that bet,” Murphy said.
“Who is America’s dad now?” he added, imitating Cosby’s voice, as he does so well.
Murphy, 58, is now a father of 10 and Cosby is sitting in a prison cell serving time for sexual assault, so you’ll have to excuse the 82-year-old convicted sex offender for not responding directly.
But Cosby’s publicist, Andrew Wyatt, took to Instagram to respond to Murphy’s bit, falling back on Cosby’s role of breaking color barriers in the entertainment industry to give Murphy his “freedom,” before slamming him as a “slave” to Hollywood.
“It is sad that Mr. Murphy would take this glorious moment of returning to SNL and make disparaging remarks against Mr. Cosby,” the Instagram post read.
“One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation, so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave,” Wyatt continued.
You may recall that Murphy and Cosby engaged in a “morality war” back in the 80s over Murphy’s course act, and the spat was featured in his successful “Eddie Murphy Raw” tour.
In the bit, Murphy recounts a call he gets from Cosby after one of Cosby’s children saw him perform.

This was not lost on social media users.

Cosby’s publicist went on to sing his bosses praises while minimizing Murphy, before appealing to their commonality to call for a “meeting of the minds” to help “enhance” black people.
“Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming click bait,” Wyatt said.
“Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation,” he closed, “in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together.”
Two of the hashtags Cosby’s spokesman included in the post are interesting in their own right: #FarFromFinished #FreeBillCosby.
