Boston Globe refuses to run anti-impeachment ad, accused of outright bias

The Boston Globe was accused of political bias after rejecting an anti-impeachment advertisement aimed at a freshman House Democrat in a swing district.

America First Policies, a non-profit organization supporting President Donald Trump’s agenda, slammed the pro-impeachment leanings of the Boston Globe’s editorial board and its sales department after the publication refused to run the ad denouncing Democrat Rep. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire.

“It’s Elizabeth Warren’s hometown paper, and has reached into Bernie Sanders’ state. It also is the ONLY paper that rejected our ad,” America First Policies told Fox News.

The Christmas-themed advertisement targeted Pappas, a freshman lawmaker who said that he would be voting in favor of both articles of impeachment against Trump.

“What the President has done is blatantly wrong, and I will not stand idly by when a President compromises the rule of law and our national security for his own personal political benefit,” Pappas said in a statement. “I will support both articles when they come to the floor for a vote. The President abused the powers of his office and obstructed Congress as it sought to put facts on the table for the American people and hold him accountable.”

“Sweaters aren’t the only ugly thing you will see this December… SHAM IMPEACHMENT,” the planned Boston Globe ad by America First Policies read, over a Christmas sweater image in the background.

“It’s time to end the ugliness by stopping Pelosi’s WITCH HUNT!” the ad continued. “One Democrat Congressman called the impeachment ‘HORRIBLY PARTISAN,’ but Chris Pappas is still siding with the liberal mob.

“Instead of putting America first, Pappas is wasting our tax dollars, ignoring our priorities and creating a nightmare of legislative gridlock,” the ad read.

The organization launched its $2 million ad campaign earlier this month in an effort to spread the anti-impeachment message in newspapers in districts nationwide that were won by Trump in 2016 but are currently represented by Democrats.

But while more than two dozen newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, the Des Moines Register and the Minneapolis Star Tribune, approved printing the latest ad which featured an image of Pappas and phone numbers to reach his offices, the Boston Globe refused, citing its advertising “standards.”

The ad “does not meet our advertising acceptability standards,” the Boston Globe told Fox News, while insisting it accepted opinion advertisements “regardless of our editorial position on any given subject.”

The paper added that it was “open to reviewing a reworked version.”

But America First Policies noted that the “modifications” suggested by the paper included the removal of the word “sham” and for the ad to feature a “better picture” of Pappas.

The organization also noted that the obviously biased newspaper had just called for the president’s impeachment earlier this month in an editorial.

“The facts show that the president has threatened this country’s core values and the integrity of our democracy. Congress now has a duty to future generations to impeach him,” the Boston Globe’s editorial board wrote on December 5.

“We know the Boston Globe’s editorial board is pro-impeachment, but had no idea that bias extended to its sales department,” Kelly Sadler, communications director for America First Policies told Fox News.

“Rejecting our ad makes one thing clear: The Boston Globe is scared it’s losing control of its preset impeachment narrative. Independent voters see through this sham impeachment and want Congress to start working on the issues they care about,” Sadler added. “When will the Globe report on that? We’re not holding our breath. The ad will be placed in the New Hampshire Union Leader instead.”
