The temerity of left-wing social justice warriors in post-Obama America knows no bounds — especially in our schools.
But then, when consequences are all but nonexistent, all things are possible.
A black teacher at Manhattan’s Beacon High School, exhorted students to boycott the school — one of New York City’s most selective — after a black student claimed that he overheard “racist remarks” made by a white Jewish girl in a confidential meeting with two white Jewish guidance counselors, the New York Post reported.
(So much for the content of our character.)
“What we’re asking of all students: Do not come to school that day to show solidarity for the support of not just students of color but all students at Beacon in providing a safe space,” said the teacher, who identified himself as “Mr. Green.”
“Until the demands are met, students are not to return to school,” the teacher added.
The teacher’s remarks were caught on video, coming Friday at a raucous cafeteria assembly, where the students appeared to be in control.
The teacher was actively involved in organizing a student response to what amounts to hearsay from one person — hands up, don’t shoot ring a bell? — discouraging other suggestions about holding a sit in or taking other in-school actions.
“What is that going to do? Students before you, before I, have done the same thing, and nothing has happened,” Mr. Green implored.
According to a statement from the white Jewish student, who was not identified, she was voicing disapproval over unfair treatment due to affirmative action programs or other factors.
“The context of my private conversation included my disapproval about the unfairness of students who were accepted to college without meeting the rigorous criteria that I and others worked so hard to achieve, because they might be athletes, afforded financial scholarships, and/or get seats based on affirmative action programs, as opposed to academic achievement as the first and only criteria,” the girl explained in a statement, according to the Post.
She said her words were twisted out of context and she was being falsely accused of racism.
The student also said one of her teachers chided her, telling her, ”People are going to hate you because you’re Jewish,” and “You don’t understand your privilege.”
The black student who overheard the exchange “barged into the meeting and berated the girl and her counselors, causing a commotion,” the Post reported.
According to the paper, one social media post accused her of saying “minorities stole her spot,” and “I’m not gonna go to schools for black and brown people or ppl who are retarded.”
As for the students being in control, the Post reported a student spoke in the cafeteria about a “lack of initiative” by the school’s white administrators and teachers in the face of an alleged hostile environment for students of color.
Students have also come up with a list of “Official Demands,” which includes a public apology for “allowing racism to fester,” an investigation of the counselors involved in the incident and mandated workshops on “implicit bias” for students and staff.
Oh, and more affirmative action to ensure that school faculty “mirrors the diversity” of NYC’s students.
Principal Ruth Lacey said she was “moved” by the passion of the students. And don’t worry, the city Department of Education says it will investigate Mr. Green’s actions.
For what it’s worth, a quick scan of social media shows that protests and walkouts at Beacon High School appear to be an industry all their own.
Hell, students at the school were protesting President Donald Trump one week after he was elected to office:
