A 65-year-old man was killed on Thanksgiving Day when a homemade booby trap set up on his front door worked against him.
Ronald Cyr rigged up a security device designed to fire a handgun if anyone attempted to break into his home.
He called 911 on Thursday to say he had been shot, according to the Van Buren Police Department, which shared details of the mishap on its official Facebook page.
Van Buren is a small rural town of just over 2000 people, located in the far northern reaches of Maine, bordering with Canada.
Not only did police find the front door rigged when they arrived, they also discovered “other unknown devices.”
“While on scene, Officers discovered that the front door of the residence had been outfitted with a device designed to fire a handgun should anyone attempt to enter the door. Other unknown devices were also discovered alarming investigators to contact the Maine State Police Bomb Squad,” the post read.
Cyr succumbed to the injuries he sustained from the homemade security contraption, which was more than likely illegal.
“While Maine law permits the use of deadly force against home intruders in some cases, many state courts have ruled that booby traps — generally defined as any covert or concealed device designed to cause injury or death when triggered — are illegal,” The Washington Post reported.
The paper noted that Border Patrol was involved in the call because the agency often respond to calls at the request of local police in rural areas along the border.
According to the responses to the Van Buren PD post, Cyr was seen as a good man.
“Ron was … a great man. He will be missed greatly. Always there to help you if you asked. He didn’t deserve going out this way,” wrote Facebook user Brian Dickinson.
Another social media user, Millie Ouellette, wrote: “RIP Ron….such an amazing man whom will never be forgotten.”
Not surprising, the gun control crowd took note of the incident, as seen in a tweet from Shannon Watts, founder of Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

But it was the responses to Watts tweet that was telling about those all too eager to strip the right to self defense — which is not to say a booby-trapped door fits the bill.
