Thankful for ‘foresight,’ but can we stop this potential second Civil War?

It’s time to count our blessings, and yet again this year Americans have an abundance of reasons for being grateful. God has most certainly been the foundation of our nation’s ascendancy from inception, and it is no coincidence that we annually give “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” as Abraham Lincoln proclaimed when he declared Thanksgiving a federal holiday in 1863 during the Civil War.

Obviously, Lincoln was a “glass half-full” kind of guy, given the horrendous state of the nation at the time.

In that vein of positivity, we might today consider expressing our appreciation for the clear warnings we’ve been given about the possibility of another civil war in our land … at least if we are inclined to heed the warnings and take some real action to prepare for that potential.

Warnings of major strife and the outbreak of war have come from all points on the political spectrum. And most telling, a strong majority of the population are in tune with the imminent danger according to a recent poll.

Less than two months ago, President Trump retweeted a warning by Fox News guest Pastor Robert Jeffress who said, “If the Democrats are successful in removing the president from office, I’m afraid it will cause a civil war-like fracture in this nation from which this country will never heal.”

Jeffress had angrily told his “Fox & Friends” hosts: “Democrats don’t care if they burn down and destroy this nation in the process. Look, I don’t pretend to speak for all evangelicals, but this week I have been traveling the country, and I’ve literally spoken to thousands and thousands of evangelical Christians. I have never seen them more angry over any issue than this attempt to illegitimately remove this president from office, overturn the 2016 election, and negate the votes of millions of evangelicals in the process. And they know that the only impeachable offense President Trump has committed was beating Hillary Clinton in 2016. That’s the unpardonable sin for which the Democrats will never forgive him.”

Last month, while pointing out an increase in politically motivated violence, Fox Business anchor Trish Regan said: “There was a time in history when the U.S. was just as fractured. When people refused to see others as people, when politics got in the way of family, of decency and faith in our government. I’m talking about the 1850s. The result was the darkest moment in American history: the Civil War.”

“We’re near a civil war now,” she added.

In July, the chief public affairs officer for, Karine Jean-Pierre, told MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough that Trump is “toxic” and that a “horrible civil war” is possible. “He is not a president for black people. He’s not a president for women. He’s not a president for brown people. He’s not a president for the LGBTQ community. He chooses to just double down and triple down on bigotry and racism.”

“I don’t know where Donald Trump wants to take this,” she continued, “but wherever it is, it’s going to be dangerous. It could lead to some sort of horrible civil war. He is testing us. He’s testing the democracy. He’s shredding the Constitution. And so, Republicans, the leadership in the Republican Party, need to stand up. You have to speak up. Because if you don’t, you are encouraging this. You are picking Donald Trump, loyalty to Donald Trump, instead of to the country.”

Countless other politicians, talking heads, and social media personalities have predicted or threatened civil war. The alarms are more frequently bubbling to the surface as Democrats’ bogus impeachment efforts and threatening rhetoric launch and fail with resounding thuds. The left’s faithful are not amused.

Organized Antifa terrorism is spreading around the country. People are brutally assaulted on the streets for their political views by crazed, brainwashed leftists. Marxist political parties and their calls for revolution are gaining serious traction among young people, especially on college campuses. Fake leftist news coverage incites anger and demonizes conservatives and any organization that does not march in lockstep with radicals’ latest social justice demands.

The First and Second Amendments are under attack and are in mortal danger of being effectively repealed as soon as the left wields the requisite power, legitimately or otherwise.

High emotions, violent reactions, riots, and protests are guaranteed to boil over in 2020. And according to a poll released last month, the average voter already believes the U.S. is approaching the verge of a civil war.

An October Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service survey found that most people “believe political, racial, and class divisions are getting worse.”

The poll also reported that “the average voter believes the U.S. is two-thirds of the way to the edge of a civil war.” On a 0-100 scale with 100 being “edge of a civil war,” the mean response is 67.23.

A November poll by Rasmussen Reports found that 31 percent of voters believe it is likely the U.S. will suffer a second civil war within the next five years. That poll also discovered 53 percent think Trump’s impeachment and removal from office would lead to violence, while 59 percent believe those opposed to Trump policies will resort to violence.

There are plenty of wise and watchful Americans who are aware of the danger ahead as we plunge deeper into the divisive chaos of a 2020 election defined by acrimony and hatred.

It is by no means a favorable climate for anyone except perhaps the anarchists in our midst, but vigilance is half the battle and no one should be surprised and unprepared if peace eludes us.
