After Democrat presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren claimed her children attended public school while she talked with a school choice activist, her campaign on Friday contradicted that claim and admitted that her son actually did attend private school.
Activist Sarah Carpenter met with Warren after leading a protest that disrupted the candidate’s speech on Thursday in Atlanta. “We are going to have the same choice that you had for your kids because I read that your children went to private schools,” said Carpenter.
At that point, Warren interrupted and said: “My children went to public schools.”
Oops. The Washington Free Beacon obtained a private-school yearbook that shows “Warren’s son, Alex Warren, attended the Kirby Hall School for at least the 1986-1987 school year, Warren’s final year as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The college preparatory school is known for its ‘academically advanced curriculum’ and offers small class sizes for students in grades K-12. The yearbook indicates that Alex Warren attended as a fifth grader.”
Kirby Hall’s grades K-5 currently cost nearly $15,000 in yearly tuition.
Asked to comment, Warren’s communications director Kristen Orthman told the Free Beacon: “Elizabeth’s daughter went to public school. Her son went to public school until 5th grade. Elizabeth wants every kid to get a great education regardless of where they live, which is why her plan makes a historic investment in our public schools. Every public school should be a great school. Her plan does not affect funding for existing non-profit charter schools, but she believes we should not put public dollars behind a further expansion of charters until they are subject to the same accountability requirements as public schools.”

In parsing the Warren claim that her “children went to public schools,” that is true enough but is clearly disingenuous and misleading in the context of Carpenter voicing her desire to “have the same choice that you had for your kids.”
The activist did not back down, insisting that Warren reconsider her education plan which aims to stringently regulate both charter and private schools, ending federal funding for further expansion of charter schools. She said she didn’t have the resources to make the same choices for her children that Warren apparently made for her son.
“I can’t pack up and say I’m leaving behind and going to Germantown, that’s our suburban area, because I can’t afford it,” said Carpenter. “My daughter can’t afford it, so we want to make what we got great whether it’s charter or traditional.”
Warren ended the discussion by saying she would “go back and read” her plan but that she “was not making promises” that she would make any changes.
The school choice protesters interrupted Warren’s speech several times at her Atlanta rally with chants of “Our children, our choice” and “We will be heard.” They wore black shirts reading, “Powerful Parent Network.”
