Former top Obama adviser mocks Biden for ‘Mr Magoo-ing’ his way through campaign

Joe Biden “kind of bumps along” through the campaign and in the Democratic debates, according to a former top Obama White House adviser.

David Axelrod remarked on CNN Wednesday about how the 2020 presidential contender and former vice president appears to be “Mr. Magoo-ing his way” along the process.

Axelrod joined Van Jones and a panel on “Anderson Cooper 360” to discuss Biden’s appearance in the fifth democratic debate on Wednesday, observing that the 2020 hopeful still had a chance despite his poor performance.

“If I’m [Michael] Bloomberg and I’m watching, I say to myself you’ve got Biden doing pretty well, Pete [Buttigieg] doing pretty well. Where is the room for the moderate to come in?” Jones said, referring to billionaire and former New York City mayor who is a late entry into the crowded Democratic primary field.

“And then Biden blows four tires in the last 10 minutes. If you’re Bloomberg you start looking and going, ‘Hey man….” Jones continued. “Or Deval Patrick. You say how many times can Biden do that and survive?”

“Biden, I wouldn’t say he was a house of fire in any of the debates that we’ve been to,” Axelrod said.

“And yet he comes — kind of bumps along, kind of Mr. Magoo-ing his way through this. You keep worrying he’s going to hit a wall, but he’s moving forward,” he added.

“Obviously, he’s losing some altitude in Iowa, New Hampshire, that should be concerning to him,” Axelrod noted. “But if he can survive those states because of his strong support in the African-American community and because he has a cultural kinship with working-class whites, non-college whites, you know, he has a play here.”

CNN host Anderson Cooper wrapped up the segment with a joke about Axelrod’s comment.

“By the way, I’ve never heard Mr. Magoo turned into a verb,” he quipped.

Not everyone agreed with Axelrod’s assessment of Biden, however.

Fox News host Brett Baier thought the former vice president did rather well on Wednesday despite how it may have appeared.

“Joe Biden had some stumbles — he always does — but less in this debate, and frankly [he] made his points about why he may still be leading in the national polls,” the “Special Report” anchor said on “Fox News @ Night.”

Baier did note how Biden was never asked during the debate, despite the ongoing impeachment hearings,  about his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and other countries.

In another Biden campaign gaffe, the Democrat’s team sent out a fundraising letter declaring he had a “pretty solid debate.” The only problem was the letter was sent hours before the Georgia event even went live.

Biden hoping he made supporters proud during a debate that had not yet happened may prove that even his team is “Mr. Magoo-ing” through the campaign.
