‘Fartgate’ trends: Swalwell claims innocence in loud noise heard ’round the web’

Rep. Eric Swalwell’s appearance Monday evening on MSNBC’s “Hardball” perfectly encapsulated the state of politics today when it comes to the Democratic Party.

In what could be the most attention-worthy happening yet in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary — even if it does include a former candidate — Swalwell was in the middle of a sentence on impeachment when a loud noise sounding very much like the passing of gas is heard.

It didn’t help matters that the California Democrat appeared to pause mid-sentence as the noise is heard as if bracing himself for flatulence.

“So far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to ask the Ukrainians to help him cheat … an election,” Swalwell said, pausing momentarily at the end of the sentence as the noise is heard.

For what it’s worth, the failed 2020 presidential candidate claimed that he did not fart on live TV.

As MSNBC is wont to do, the network ran cover for the Democrat as the incident took the internet by storm, claiming in a tweet that the noise was a coffee mug “scraping across the desk.”

Swalwell responded to the tweet: “TOTAL EXONERATION.”

“Sorry to disappoint the conspiracy theorists – it was the #hardball mug scraping across the desk. Get yours today and let’s get back to the news!” the network said.

Somehow, the explanation doesn’t pass the smell test, Either way, it’s safe to say that “Hardball” anchor Chris Matthews’ daily dribblings haven’t drawn this much interest in some time.

Meanwhile, the hashtag “#fartgate” began trending on Twitter as folks had a field day with the incident — after all, juvenile humor is low hanging fruit.

Donald Trump Jr. got in on the fun and nailed it in his response: “Most intelligible thing to come out of Swalwell in years.”

Social media users with the time could spend hours perusing the hilarious reactions, as the jokes almost write themselves.

Here’s a sampling of some of the responses from Twitter:
