Taylor testifies Ukrainian President Zelensky told him, ‘The call was fine. I was happy with the call’

Democrats definitely did not put their best foot forward in the impeachment inquiry by making William Taylor, the former top diplomat in Ukraine, one of their first public witnesses.

Taylor admitted multiple times that he had zero firsthand knowledge to provide and he instead presented secondhand information and rumors that played into Democrat conspiracy theories about President Trump supposedly trying to pressure Ukraine into investigating one of his political rivals, former Vice President Joe Biden.

The most telling part of Taylor’s testimony is that he said he had multiple meetings with the Ukraine president following the Trump phone call that kicked off this entire political circus. As Jim Jordan got Taylor to admit at one point when he got an opportunity to question the man, Taylor never once heard the Ukraine president bring up a potential Biden investigation during those meetings.

What makes those meetings worse is that, under questioning, Taylor also admitted on Wednesday at the hearing that the Ukraine president actually said that the phone call with President Trump went fine.

Saying he was in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office following the phone call with Trump, Taylor said he was told there were no objections to the call.

“He said, ‘The call was fine. I was happy with the call,'” Taylor recalled.

If you’re going strictly by facts, Taylor ended up being a better witness for the president than Democrats. He was forced to admit multiple times he had no substantial information to hand over and zero firsthand knowledge of anything illegal.

It was bad enough that his meetings with Zelensky produced no objections to the call in question, but it’s so much worse that Taylor is yet another person to admit that he was directly told by the Ukraine president that there was nothing abnormal about the phone call between he and Trump.

Folks on Twitter spent most of the day roasting Taylor and this latest admission was no different.

If Wednesday’s public hearing is any indication of the future, the impeachment road will be a long one. While Republicans like Devin Nunes and Jim Jordan have rightly used facts to push back against Democrats’ “scorched Earth” mission to take down the president, this has clearly become an investigation that respects rumor and innuendo above firsthand accounts of anything. At one point in the hearing, Adam Schiff even jumped in to shut down Jim Jordan as he laid waste to Taylor’s testimony and then later tried to protect his “star witness” by ordering Jordan not to interrupt him.
