The impeachment resolution that isn’t: Dems try to have their cake and eat it too

Congress has descended into “impeachapalooza” and we’re well past the point of no return now — even if Democrats try to have their cake and eat it too.

That’s the assessment of Fox News’ Chad Pergram, who talks about an impeachment resolution that, according to party leadership, isn’t an impeachment resolution.

Taking D.C. gamesmanship to new levels while hiding behind the Constitution, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and her cohorts continue to parse words as they forge ahead with the dirty task of taking out President Trump, albeit doing their level best to tiptoe around the political ramifications of impeachment.

With Republicans making headway with their talking points about a secret impeachment inquisition taking place behind closed doors in the basement of the U.S. Capitol, with no official vote on the issue, Pelosi and co. countered with a resolution “to formalize the impeachment probe and establish parameters for the investigation,” as Pergram described the Democrats’ measure.

In effect, a move to structure the impeachment inquiry.

More from Pergram:

Pelosi announced plans to assemble a resolution in a “Dear Colleague” letter she sent to House Democrats on Oct. 28. In her missive, Pelosi said the resolution “affirms the ongoing, existing investigation that is currently being conducted by our committees as part of this impeachment inquiry.” A note at the end of the letter gave a brief description as to what the resolution would do: “Directing certain committees to continue their ongoing investigations as part of the existing House of Representatives inquiry into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach Donald John Trump, president of the United States of America, and for other purposes.”

But Pelosi’s insistence to a reporter that this “wasn’t an impeachment resolution” is the best indication that there’s a vulnerability among Democrats on the issue.

An exchange between the Fox News reporter and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., who said he doesn’t know what an impeachment resolution is, is instructive to that end.

“Are you reluctant to call it [an] ‘impeachment resolution’ because of the potential for the public to perceive this at this stage as impeaching the president, even though you’re obviously several steps short of that?” Pergram asked.

“I want to be very careful in my verbiage because I’ve found it repeatedly misconstrued by those of you who either write the stories or the headlines,” Hoyer replied. “I want to be very precise. We are continuing the process of determining whether ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ have been committed by the president of the United States, which would justify, at that point in time, proceeding with articles of impeachment.”

Party leadership is effectively saying they’re investigating Trump for impeachment, but since they have had no formal vote they can back away from the partisan effort at any given moment, as if it never happened — such as the point when polling tells Pelosi that they are facing impending disaster in Nov. 2020.

To that end, party leadership consumed with impeachment is trying to paint a picture of business as usual on Capitol Hill, with Democrats busy doing the “important work for the people.”

Hoyer distributed a “Dear Colleague” letter on Friday, reminding members to expect work on renewing the Export-Import Bank and efforts to lower prescription drug costs, Pergram reported.

“The House is continuing to do important work for the people, even as our committees continue the impeachment inquiry,” the letter said. “We can, and we will, continue to make progress on critical issues while upholding our Constitutional duty.”

A diversion from reality that may prove to be necessary.

As Democrats take their dog and pony show public this week, they are scrambling to stay ahead of the growing concerns about the Ukraine whistleblower’s motivations and his association with House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and his staff.

Unfortunately for Democrats, their media allies are in a frenzy, running around like their hair is on fire over the remote possibility that President Trump may be removed from office. Consumed to the point that impeachment has sucked all the air out of the room.

Just ask CNN chief Jeff Zucker, who reportedly declared that “impeachment is the story.”
