Mexican police officer gunned down in broad daylight in ‘revenge killing’ for arrest of El Chapo’s son

A high-level Mexican police officer was assassinated in broad daylight Wednesday, allegedly for having committed the apparent sin of partaking in the failed arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

“The 30-year-old officer, named by police only as Eduardo N., was killed Wednesday by gunmen in Culiacan, Sinaloa. Eduardo was a high-level officer in Sinaloa’s State Preventive Police,” Newsweek has confirmed.

CCTV surveillance footage obtained by the Mexican newspaper Excelsior shows the officer parking his Nissan four-door Sedan outside a shopping center. Moments later, a red sedan pulls up and at least two armed gunmen jump out and pepper Eduardo’s car with an estimated 155+ bullets. He did not survive.

While the motive for the young officer’s murder remains unconfirmed, some suspect it may be linked to his involvement in López’s failed arrest weeks earlier.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, Mexican security forces captured the notorious drug lord (like father, like son) about 370 miles north of Mexico City.

“Mexican Security Minister Alfonso Durazo said 30 members of the National Guard militarized police were patrolling an area in the city, 370 miles northwest of Mexico City when they were fired on from a house,” the Daily Mail reported at the time.

“Authorities fired back and were eventually able to enter the house where they found four cartel members inside, including Ovidio Guzman, who is accused of drug trafficking in the U.S.”

But upon Guzmán López being taken into custody, all hell broke loose.

“Allies of Guzman quickly flocked to the scene and ‘surrounded the house with a greater force’ than that of authorities, [Durazo] said,” the Los Angeles Times noted. “At the same time … ‘other groups carried out violent actions against citizens in various points of the city, generating a situation of panic.’”

Overpowered, Mexican security forces eventually capitulated to the thugs’ demands and released López, a move some experts decried for setting a “dangerous precedent.”

“The message is: the Mexican government is not in control, and it can be successfully blackmailed,” Falko Ernst, a Mexico researcher with the nonprofit International Crisis Group, reportedly said.

The message also appears to be that any official or officer caught acting against the interests of the cartels will face deadly consequences.

What remains unclear is Eduardo’s exact level of involvement with the notorious drug lord’s arrest.

“Eduardo was not involved in Guzman’s arrest, though was called in to assist the subsequent security operation,” Newsweek reported.

But Sky News reported otherwise.

“According to the force that Eduardo worked for, he was involved in the capture, and the subsequent release, of Ovidio Guzman in October,” the outlet has alleged.

If this proves true, it would mean Eduardo’s murder was a targeted assassination meant to instill fear in a government that already appears to be drowning in cowardice.

His murder comes only days after nine U.S. citizens were gunned down and burned to death by a drug cartel. In response to the massacre, U.S. President Donald Trump offered to send troops across the border to assist in eliminating the cartels:

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected the offer, choosing instead to rant about the need for so-called “peace.”
