President Donald Trump wants to know who gave information about his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the whistleblower whose complaint led to a fiery Thursday House Intelligence Committee hearing.
Trump reportedly lashed out at the whistleblower — who may be a C.I.A. agent if a new report is to be believed — and the media.
At the private breakfast on Thursday, Trump also said he wanted to know who gave the information about his phone call to the whistleblower, since the official complaint suggests the whistleblower has no direct knowledge of the phone call.
“I want to know who’s the person, who’s the person who gave the whistleblower the information? Because that’s close to a spy,” Trump said. “You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart? Right? The spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”
Maggie Haberman of The New York Times reported on the event and claimed people in the room were “stunned” by Trump’s words, though that seems a little farfetched considering how used to the president’s rhetoric people should be at this point.
Trump also went after the press in his remarks.
“You know, these animals in the press,” he said. “They’re animals, some of the worst human beings you’ll ever meet.”
He continued by calling the mainstream media “scum.”
“They’re scum,” he said. “Many of them are scum, and then you have some good reporters, but not many of them, I’ll be honest with you.”
The president also brought up Joe Biden and his questionable relationship to his son Hunter’s overseas business dealings in places like China and Ukraine. Democrats allege that Trump asked for dirt on Biden from the Ukrainian president — something Zelensky himself denied — but they have ignored the fact that Biden has long been accused of using his former position as vice president to profit off of his son’s business dealings and to help him out, especially in Ukraine.
Biden claims he’s never talked to his son about his business ventures, but that contradicts his son previously saying that he had discussed his business dealings with his father on at least one occasion.
“Then you have sleepy Joe Biden who’s dumb as a rock,” Trump said. “This guy was dumb on his best day and he’s not having his best day right now. He’s dumb as a rock. So you have sleepy Joe and his kid, who’s got a lot of problems, he got thrown out of the Navy — look, I’m not going to, it’s a problem…so we won’t get into why.”
Trump also spent Thursday lashing out at Democrats and the media on Twitter. In one tweet, the president called the investigation into his phone call “another witch hunt.”
“A whistleblower with second hand information? Another Fake News Story! See what was said on the very nice, no pressure, call. Another Witch Hunt!” he tweeted.
