How late-night hosts celebrated impeachment: ‘Holy crap. Is this finally happening?’

After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump on Tuesday, America’s slew of late-night TV hosts and comics reacted with jokes.

But whereas a few of the jokes were non-partisan and designed to just make people laugh, the majority of them appeared to be baked in unabated anti-Trump partisanship.

First up was late-night “TBS” host Conan O’Brien, who attracted criticism last year after he cracked a “sick joke” about first lady Melania Trump.

“Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump over his inappropriate conduct with Ukraine. That’s a big story,” He said.

“Big thing that’s happening. Yeah, Trump was furious and said this is nuts. ‘I’ve done way worse things. This? I’ve killed people. What are you talking about?'”

That joke didn’t seem particularly partisan, though what O’Brien had said about Trump’s “inappropriate conduct with Ukraine” was patently false. Plus, listen to him below and take note of how his clearly liberal audience reacted to the impeachment announcement:

Next up was late-night Comedy Central host Trevor Noah, who surprised many last spring by saluting Trump for being the “first president to actually deliver” on his campaign promises.

Holy crap. Is this finally happening? After two years of avoiding it, Trump may finally face articles of impeachment, which, believe me, he is not happy about,” he said.

“It’s impeachment which Trump hates plus articles which he hates even more. … And if you thought Trump was unhinged before, I can’t even imagine what he’s going to be like now. Like, he’s been crazy. Can you imagine what he’s gonna be like now?”

That did seem partisan.

Next was usually nonpartisan late-night NBC host Jimmy Fallon. He chose to perform an impersonation of the president. And in his impersonation, he acted as if the president is a racist who loathes “diverse cultures and ethnicities.”

Fallon also gave credence to the media-crafted conspiracy theory that the president had tried to blackmail Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Thank me. Thank me very much,” he said while impersonating the president. “You’re all very happy that I’m here at the United Nations. And then wow, just look at all the room full of diverse cultures and ethnicities seriously, it’s like the scariest college brochure I’ve ever seen.”

“But I know what you’re all thinking, it’s so great to be here with me for the last four to six hours of my presidency. Who knew? You make one phone call blackmailing a foreign leader and everyone acts like you made one phone call blackmailing a foreign leader. I guess it’s like the old saying, ‘Fool me once, shame on you, collude twice, why not collude a third time?'”

To be clear, the president never colluded with anybody.

Next up were late night’s most anti-Trump hosts, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel and CBS’s Stephen Colbert.

“The whistles are blowing in Washington as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi today announced that the House of Representatives will launch a formal impeachment inquiry into the actions of the president of the United States,” Kimmel said.

“For months now, Pelosi has been like ‘it’s not going to get rid of him.’ She’s been very reluctant to do this, but once again, Donald Trump is doing what he does best, forcing a woman to do something she didn’t want to do.”

That was clearly partisan. So was what Colbert said.

“Oh, good Lordy. What a day. You really feel the ground shifting under your feet,” he excitedly announced to his far-left audience. “But it you’re at home and you got a seatbelt under your couch … buckle up, because for two and a half years, Donald Trump has had scandal after scandal: Russian collusion, obstruction of justice, saying Nazis are fine people, being an unnamed co-conspirator to campaign finance violations, lying about the Moscow Trump Tower, stealing money to pay for the border wall, faking the weather with a sharpie.”

“Every time — every time — none of those are made up. Every time, people have asked, ‘Is this the thing? Surely, this must be the thing.’ And every time, it wasn’t the thing. But here’s the thing: There’s a new thing, and it might be the thing.”

That was extraordinarily partisan and exceedingly false on every level. The president was effectively exonerated of collusion and obstruction of president, the president never called Nazis “fine people,” the president has not been named a co-conspirator to campaign finance violations, the president hasn’t been proven to have lied about the Moscow Trump Tower meeting, etc., etc., etc.

Last but not least were CBS’s “Late Late Show” host James Corden and NBC’s Seth Meyers.

“You heard Pelosi! Finally, the time for talking about impeachment is over! It’s time to inquire about impeachment! This is it, guys! Let the talking stop and the inquiring begin!” Corden said.

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this evening that Democrats will open a formal Impeachment Inquiry against President Trump. And I’ve had my doubts in the past but I think this time she’s serious,” Meyers added.

Listen to the rest of the “jokes” below:

Gosh, it’s hard to imagine why so many Americans believe “comedy is dead” …

It’s not that the jokes were offensive. It’s that they were all designed to appease left-wing Democrats. Not one comedian joked about the Democrats’ hypocrisy or CNN’s inability to understand sarcasm. As usual, it was just an arguably tired, boring anti-Trump parade.
