Trump pulls rug out from under Dems on brink of impeachment

Never mind that the Democratic Party is largely responding to unfounded reports of alleged collusion between President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian government in going after 2020 Democratic candidate Joe Biden, the charge is serious enough for stragglers in the party to get on board with moving forward with impeachment.

For those paying attention, it was more a question of when, not if, and for Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., the “when” is now, as seen in a fiery floor speech Tuesday from the civil rights icon.

“Today, I come with a heavy heart,” Lewis declared. “Deeply concerned about the future of our democracy.”

Never mind that his party may represent the greatest threat to “our democracy,” or that their partisan attempt to remove a duly-elected president dies on the doorstep of the U.S. Senate.

“People approach me everywhere I go, whether I’m traveling back and forth to Atlanta or around our country, they believe, they truly believe that our nation is descending into darkness,” Lewis said. “They never dreamed that the United States, once seen as a beacon of hope, and as an inspiration to people striving for equality and justice, would be fallen into such disgrace.”

“It keeps me up at night,” Lewis continued. “We took an oath to protect this nation against all domestic enemies and foreign enemies. Sometimes I’m afraid to go to sleep for fear that I will wake up and our democracy will be gone, will be gone. And never returned.”

So, having commandeered the moral high ground in America, the Democrat is now compelled to do what?

“I have been patient while we tried every other path, and used every other tool,” Lewis said from the House floor. “We will never find the truth unless we use the power given to the House of Representatives, and the House alone, to begin an official investigation as dictated by the Constitution.”

“The future of our democracy is at stake,” he continued. “There comes a time when you have to be moved by the spirit or history to take action to protect and preserve the integrity of our nation. I believe, I truly believe, the time to begin impeachment proceedings against this president has come. To delay or to do otherwise would betray the foundation of our democracy.”

And it appears that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is finally going along with impeachment.

At least, that’s according to MSNBC analyst Howard Fineman, who tweeted: “Very solid #Dem House leadership source just confirmed to me that @SpeakerPelosi will announce a formal impeachment inquiry this afternoon and imply that she herself favors impeachment of [President Trump].

Fineman shared more details on the decision, to include Pelosi determining Trump’s “truculent disdain for the law is just too constant to avoid having to impeach him.”

Never one to miss a beat, President Trump quickly responded to all the hoopla to announce that he has authorized the release of the transcripts of the call he had with the Ukrainian president, which is at the center of the latest impeachment controversy.

The alleged reports of this phone call from an anonymous source are what prompted Democrats and their media allies to set their hair on fire.

“I am currently at the United Nations representing our Country, but have authorized the release tomorrow of the complete, fully declassified and unredacted transcript of my phone conversation with President Zelensky of Ukraine,” Trump tweeted.

“You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call,” he added in a second tweet. “No pressure and, unlike Joe Biden and his son, NO quid pro quo! This is nothing more than a continuation of the Greatest and most Destructive Witch Hunt of all time!”

Your move, Dems.
