Debate moderator asks Kamala why she did nothing for criminal justice ‘when you had the power’

ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis, who was one of the moderators of the Democratic primary debate, humiliated Democratic Senator Kamala Harris by asking why Harris did nothing to advance criminal justice reform when she was the attorney general of California.

Davis referenced Harris’ new plan for “criminal justice reform” while pointing out Harris’ indifference to the topic during her years as California’s law-enforcement czar from 2011 to 2017.

Davis said: “[Your criminal-justice reform plan] does contradict some of your prior positions. Among them, you used to oppose the legalization of marijuana, now you don’t. You used to oppose outside investigations of police shootings, now you don’t.”

Davis continued: “You said that you’ve changed on these and other things because you were, ‘swimming against the current and thankfully, the currents have changed.’ But when you had the power, why didn’t you try to affect change then?”

The audience exploded into raucous applause at the pointed question that called out Kamala Harris’ apparent hypocrisy and pandering.

Harris meekly stammered that “there have been many distortions of my record.” Harris then launched in a weak defense of her flip-flopping and apparent disregard for positions she now claims she champions:

“I made a decision that if I was going to have the ability to reform the system, I would try to do it from the inside. And so, I took on the position that allowed me, without asking permission, to create one of the first in the nation initiatives that was a model and became a national model around people who were arrested for drugs and getting them jobs.

I created one of the first in the nation requirements that a state law enforcement agency would have to wear cameras and keep them on full-time. I created one of the first in the nation trainings for police officers on the issue of racial bias and the need to reform the system.”

Kamala Harris then admitted that she wasn’t effective at her job.

“Was I able to get enough done? Absolutely not. But my plan has been described by activists as being a bold and comprehensive plan that is about ending mass incarceration, about taking the profit out of the criminal justice system. I plan on shutting down for-profit prisons on day one. It will be about what we need to do to hold law enforcement, including prosecutors, accountable.”

Meanwhile, Harris’ dismal record as California Attorney General has also come under fire from Hispanic groups.

In March 2019, Latino activists trashed Harris for refusing to investigate the Ponzi scheme operated by nutritional supplement marketer Herbalife in exchange for what amounts to bribes masquerading as “donations” from Herbalife lobbyist Heather Podesta.

Heather Podesta was then married to Tony Podesta, the high-powered lobbyist with longstanding ties to Hillary Clinton. Tony’s brother, John Podesta, was the campaign manager for Hillary 2016 presidential campaign.

As California attorney general, Kamala Harris refused to investigate the fraudulent pyramid scheme operated by Herbalife, which allegedly exploited the Latino community:

“Herbalife’s records indicate that at least 60% of the company’s distributors are Spanish-speaking Hispanics. And the total number of Hispanics might be as high as 80% when bilingual and English speakers are included.”

In 2013, the League of United Latin American Citizens and four other groups urged Harris to investigate Herbalife for fraud.

Kamala Harris denied their request without explanation, even though similar investigations were occurring elsewhere around the country.
