Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, has taken a hard stance against late-term abortion — and the move will likely place her at odds with many in her party.
Gabbard, a military combat veteran who used to be pro-life, touched on the third rail of American politics in an interview with Dave Rubin that aired Sunday night.
Rubin, who said he was “grudgingly pro-choice,” noted how Democrats are “going so crazy with pushing how much later the abortion can be. Quite literally now we have the phrase ‘post-birth abortion.'”
“I take a more libertarian position on this issue that government really shouldn’t be in that place of dictating to a woman the choice that she should make,” Gabbard said. “I think there should be some restrictions, though.”
She then laid out the standard talking points required of any Democrat today about a woman having the right to choose.
“For me personally, I would not make that choice for myself,” Gabbard added. “But I don’t believe that I should be telling anybody else the kinds of decisions that they should make for themselves or their family and therefore a woman should have the right to choose and I will stand up and fight to protect her right to do so.”
“I think the third trimester, unless a woman’s life or severe health consequences is at risk, then there shouldn’t be an abortion in the third trimester.”
Gabbard has a history of clashing with party leadership, resigning as vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 after speaking out about the refusal to schedule more primary debates — she backed Bernie Sanders.
Every other Democratic presidential candidate supports unrestricted abortions, or refuses to say exactly where they would draw the line.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., did say back in May that “limits” on third trimester abortions “are very important.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner, had hell to pay for supporting the Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal funding for certain abortions. He was forced to backtrack on the stance.
Gabbard has maintained a 100-percent rating from Planned Parenthood, according to the National Review.
“She supports federal funding of abortion, but she did not co-sponsor a Democratic bill in the House that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the direct use of taxpayer funds to cover abortion procedures. She also did not sponsor the Democratic ‘Women’s Health Protection Act,’ a piece of federal legislation that would override state restrictions on abortion,” Alexandra DeSanctis reported.
DeSanctis took to Twitter to say “good for Tulsi,” but added, “I hope she doesn’t back down when the pro-abortion mob comes for her.”
Here’s a sampling of some of the responses from Twitter:
I wonder if progressives like @KyleKulinski who helped elevate Tulsi Gabbard are happy seeing her be embraced by far right ultra-conservatives? This type of misinformation about abortion is damaging to women and the debate over reproductive-rights.

pro-abortion “mob”
The “mob” is the other way. It want to take away legal rights and ban all abortion.
Every day, you are part of that mob.

It seems she’s progressively become more pro-choice. So don’t hold your breath on her standing her ground on this.

@TulsiGabbard thank you for being brave

The Dems are truly blind and lost if they don’t nominate her….I like her and I disagree with her on almost everything! She seems honest, diligent and smart

You have to squint, but in comparison to the rest of the Dem candidates, Tulsi almost looks sane.

This took courage, which is why I love @tulsigabbard (though I disagree with her on many issues).
