MSNBC’s Chuck Todd believes he knows why people who unhealthily obsess over President Donald Trump’s every word and action — including his jokes — feel so “fatigued” all the time. According to his logic, it’s all part of the president’s grand plan to “wear down his critics.”
If you believe this sounds like a conspiracy theory — one of many from MSNBC — you’re not alone.
Fatigue is a common symptom of Trump Derangement Syndrome. You can only be intellectually dishonest for so long before your body starts breaking down. Some are at an advanced stage where a single Maddow conspiracy theory could send them over the edge.

What triggered this latest rant from Todd was the president offering to hold next year’s G7 summit at one of his golf club resorts.
“We begin with one of the most confounding issues in American politics — that President Trump is still trying to use the office to enrich himself, still embracing Putin, still undermining democratic institutions here and abroad, still misleading us daily and still skirting accountability for all of it,” the MSNBC host bemoaned.
“And as the dust settles on the president’s erratic performance on the world stage over these past 72 hours, particularly at the G7 but really in a couple of days before then as well, it’s remarkable just how little dust gets kicked up anymore over behavior that in any other presidency in modern times would be considered unthinkable and perhaps to some impeachable.”
After citing a couple more complaints, the host then got to the crux of his point.
“If you’re left feeling worn down, you’re not alone,” he said. “Perhaps that’s the president’s goal — to wear down his critics. It’s worked well for him in real estate. He just wears people down. That’s the art of the deal. Whatever, just let Trump have it.”
“But it also might be a goal to rile up his critics as well. And that is what you might call the riddle of Trump fatigue, and it speaks to the single biggest question overshadowing everything in politics — is the American public tiring of it?”

According to The New York Times, the answer to his latter question is no.
“Donald J. Trump doesn’t always seem like a candidate focused on expanding his base of support. He may have done so anyway,” the outlet reported earlier this month. “The share of Americans who say they have a favorable view of him has increased significantly since the 2016 election.”
“And over the last few months, some of the highest-quality public opinion polls, though not all, showed the president’s job approval rating — a different measure from personal favorability — had inched up to essentially match the highest level of his term.”
Conversely, the media’s favorability rating is at an all-time low. Why is that? While Todd may not want to hear the answer, the president tried explaining why in an interview last year.
“A lot of the animosity that we have in our country is because of fake news,” he said at the time to The Daily Caller. “They’re so angry at the news. They get it. You guys are at my rallies all the time, you see the anger when I mention the words ‘fake news’ and they turn around. And they use CNN because they — it just sort of works for them I guess.”
“But it’s ABC, it’s — NBC is maybe worse than anybody. I mean, NBC’s a total fraud as far as I’m concerned. Their news is disgusting. But I think NBC is as bad as anybody. You look at — and CBS — you look at what’s going on with the fake news and the people get it.”
“Now they get it — you know they had a very high approval rating before I became president and I think it’s actually a great achievement of mine. Their approval rating now is down as low as just about anybody. And much lower than your president. I actually have good approval ratings, which nobody ever writes. I was at 51, I guess, with Rasmussen the other day.”
But why does the public appear to like the president more than the media? Could it be because the media have obsessively been attacking him since the day he rode down the Trump Tower escalator in 2015? Could it be because The New York Times has openly admitted that its core mission has and continues to be #OrangeManBad? Could it be because the American people can see for themselves how the media relentlessly attack Trump but then turn around and cater to Democrats?
While there’s no way to know for certain why so many Americans feel the way they do, the following replies to Todd and his peers at “Meet the Press” do seem to suggest that they are indeed fatigued — but not because of the president:
