The same media that hysterically criticize and fact-check President Donald Trump’s every word, including even his jokes, seem awfully open to downplaying or ignoring Joe Biden’s every single gaffe or misstatement. Consider what happened this weekend.
“What’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it?” the former vice president said to reporters while campaigning in Keene, New Hampshire on Saturday. “And what a neat town. I mean this is sort of a scenic, beautiful town … everybody has been really friendly. I like Keene a lot.”
At least he got the city right …
Watch:
Is it troubling that he accidentally mistook one state for another? Not really. But it is troubling that somehow the media continually downplays and makes excuses for the former VP’s gaffes. Whereas in Trump’s case, he can’t even make a typo without the media launching a full-blown psychological analysis.
“Trump’s Typos Reveal His Lack of Fitness for the Presidency,” a headline from a piece published in The Atlantic at the start of the year reads.
Nor can the president make a sarcastic joke without being accused of being clinically insane. Earlier in the week, for instance, he jokingly told reporters that he’s “the chosen one” when it comes to winning a trade war with China. In response, they accused him of having a “psychotic-like state” of mind, of being delusional, of boasting a messiah complex, etc.
“[T]he president’s pathological narcissism appears to [be] metastasizing into a messiah complex,” a Rolling Stone report that’s supposed to be serious journalism reads.
The criticism grew so fierce that the president was forced to issue a statement:
When I looked up to the sky and jokingly said “I am the chosen one,” at a press conference two days ago, referring to taking on Trade with China, little did I realize that the media would claim that I had a “Messiah complex.” They knew I was kidding, being sarcastic, and just….

….having fun. I was smiling as I looked up and around. The MANY reporters with me were smiling also. They knew the TRUTH…And yet when I saw the reporting, CNN, MSNBC and other Fake News outlets covered it as serious news & me thinking of myself as the Messiah. No more trust!

Meanwhile, when Biden said that “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids,” a “journalist” with NBC News rushed to impugn Trump’s criticism of Biden, telling the audience that the president’s campaign had “seized on a few words” to attack the candidate.
Similar responses from the media were seen when he claimed to have been vice president at the time of the Parkland shooting and argued to his supporters that Americans need to “choose truth over facts.”
In every case, the gaffe was downplayed, no matter how egregious. In fact, a columnist with the Los Angles Times went so far as to suggest Biden simply “embrace his gaffes.”
The double standards have bothered some among the conservative media:
Media bias 101:
If Trump misstates something, media’s reaction is:
-“falsely stated”
-“lied”
-“has mentally lost it, needs 25th Amendment invoked”When Biden makes stuff up that never happened or does not even know where he is, media’s reaction is:
-“He’s just gaffe prone!”

To be fair, those among the right have been as equally critical of Biden’s gaffes as the mainstream media have been of the president’s gaffes, typos and jokes.
Case in point:
These aren’t gaffes, they are a pattern.? https://t.co/B0PTiTQtV5

When are they going to pull him off the campaign trail and remove him as a candidate? He is obviously not mentally with it. How could he possibly lead this country?

C’mon, @JoeBiden‘s staff… enough is enough. Get this man some help, and end this farce.
— Wangenshadenfreude (@Wangenstein) August 24, 2019
Someone, please let this poor man sit down! He’s tired.

The only thing Joe should be running for president of is as a resident of memory care society of America.
— BrianSchromm (@BrianSchromm) August 24, 2019
I don’t think this is funny. I think it is dangerous for @JoeBiden to be our next president! And the Democrats said we can’t trust Trump with the nuclear button? Warren, Harris, Sa nders – I don’t think Kim Jong-un will take them seriously. Seriously @dnc

DEMENTIA! Get this man out of the race. Having him be president is more dangerous than having Trump. Biden could easily be manipulated and used as a puppet with his illness. Which is likely what oligarchs are hoping to do.

Of course, those seen above are political operatives and random people — not mainstream media “journalists,” the latter of whom have again resorted to defending the 2020 contender:
There’s been a lot of discussion over Joe Biden confusing Vermont and New Hampshire.
It happens.
It did for NBC News a little more than six years ago. Here’s “Nightly News” with its mea culpa. https://t.co/j9fmcikcTk

Come on!!! It’s a stone’s throw from Vermont!!!

As of Sunday morning, neither CNN, The New York Times nor The Washington Post had yet run a report on the wannabe president’s latest gaffe.
