A city council candidate in Michigan who made national headlines last week after she declared at a public forum that her town should remain white “as much as possible” hasn’t just dug herself in deeper — she’s practically dug herself to the other side of the planet.
During an election forum last Thursday in the Michigan town of Marysville, candidate Jean Cramer straight-up said that she wants to keep the town “a white community as much as possible.”
“My suggestion, my recommendation, keep Marysville a white community as much as possible,” she said. “In other words, no foreign-border, no foreign people because of what in our past that we’ve experienced, it’s better to have simply American-born.”
Listen:
After Kramer’s remarks, acting Mayor Kathy Hayman expressed outrage.
“My son-in-law is a black man and I have bi-racial grandchildren,” she said. “And I take this very personally what you’ve said, and I know that there’s nothing I can say that’s going to change your mind, but we all have the same … we just need to have more kindness.”
In response, Cramer reportedly doubled down after the forum concluded by attacking Hayman’s daughter for being involved in an interracial relationship.
“What Kathy Hayman doesn’t know is that her family is in the wrong,” she said to The Times Herald. “[A] husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids. That’s how it’s been from the beginning of, how can I say, when God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time. But as far as me being against blacks, no I’m not.”
The following day, she tripled down by suggesting to the same paper that she’s only okay with living by black people “as long as they keep up their home, their property.”
When then asked specifically by a reporter with The Times Herald whether she understands why some people may find her views on interracial relationships troubling, she quadrupled down.
“Because those people don’t know the other side of it,” she said. “For whatever reason, I’ve heard, they love each other, whatever, but there’s also such a thing as remaining single. People don’t necessarily have to get married, and, if they love somebody, love them single. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Listen:
Instead of treating Cramer like what she appears to be — a very kooky old woman who has zero chance of winning a seat on the local city council — the national media have since elevated her into a national phenomenon and used her irrational views to gin up fear about widespread racism.
Some have also tried to link Cramer’s rhetoric to President Donald Trump by accusing her of “taking a play out of the Trump playbook.”
To be clear, there’s no record of President Donald Trump speaking about keeping America “a white community.” He and other conservatives, many of them non-white, have however spoken about keeping America free of, one, illegal aliens, and two, refugees from countries linked to Islamic terrorism.
But never mind the facts:

Before Trump nobody dared to make these disgusting statements in public. Now, following his lead, it’s just an every day event. ??? https://t.co/6sqN8FgIu3

One of the worst things about the Trump era is that babbling ninnies like this bigot Jean Cramer, a candidate for City Council in MI, just vomit out their racist poison in public instead of being shamed out of political life. https://t.co/ak8txOFhBV

Racism never went away in America, but for a while most racists realized they’d be held in contempt for expressing it as plainly, and publicly, as this candidate in Michigan. In the Trump era, they don’t care what anyone thinks, and say so. https://t.co/F5DnUxcoRq

I guess Donald Trump actually is inspiring women to enter the political arena.

@MarysvilleMI @mpschools to the town and schools of Marysville MI, this is a teachable moment. #racism From @realDonaldTrump to Jean Cramer, racists have no place representing all the people.

Can Jean Cramer quote the verse in the Bible or commandments were her god, or any other god, refers to interracial couples? Some people really are nothing. They are not Christian, they are not logical, they are not American. All they are is devotees of Donald Trump. https://t.co/ELGkBLNDLu

There’s no record of Cramer being either a Republican or a Trump supporter. All that’s known is that she’s old, highly irrelevant (in that nobody even knew who she was until she made her remarks last week) and bound to disappear from the public spotlight as soon as the election’s over — or maybe even sooner, in fact.
How so? The town’s actual mayor — Hayman had just been filling in for the hearing — has made it clear that he wants Cramer to drop out, pronto.
“I would say that I probably came to the conclusion this morning,” Mayor Dan Damman reportedly said Friday. “After the initial shock of what she said really sank in and (given) the deep-seated viewpoints that she has, I don’t believe that she is fit to serve as an elected official in Marysville or anywhere else.”
