President Donald Trump said he’s postponed a scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark after she said “Greenland is not for sale” and dismissed the idea as an “absurd discussion.”
Trump tweeted: “Based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.”
He continued: “The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!”

President Trump had originally been scheduled to meet with Frederiksen in two weeks. Trump was invited to visit Denmark by Queen Margrethe II on September 2 and 3.

Trump’s abrupt cancellation of his trip came two days after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen forcefully said that “Greenland is not for sale” (video below)
Frederiksen added: “Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic. I persistently hope that this is not something that is seriously meant.”

Greenland is a semi-autonomous Danish territory with a population of roughly 56,000 people. Earlier this week, Trump casually suggested purchasing the land, saying Denmark is losing money on it and is not realizing its full potential.
However, Prime Minister Frederiksen said the discussions are a non-starter.
“Thankfully, the time where you buy and sell other countries and populations is over. Let’s leave it there,” Frederiksen said. “Jokes aside, we will of course love to have an even closer strategic relationship with the United States.”
As BizPac Review reported, officials in Denmark were outraged by President Trump’s alleged offer.
Keep in mind that Trump never made an offer. It was merely reported that one of his aides had raised the idea, and he said he was considering it.
Ane Lone Bagger, Greenland’s foreign minister, said: “We are open for business, but we’re not for sale.”

“If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof, that he has gone mad,” said Soren Espersen of the Danish People’s Party. “The thought of Denmark selling 50,000 citizens to the United States is completely ridiculous.”

While the media are mocking President Trump for even considering such a purchase, nobody laughed when Democratic president Harry Truman offered to buy Greenland in 1946 for $100 million in gold.
In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million under the tenure of impeached Democratic president Andrew Johnson.
And in 1917, Democratic president Woodrow Wilson negotiated the purchase of the U.S. Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million.
Both purchases have turned out to be great investments for the United States.
Meanwhile, the president got laughs after poking some fun at himself on Twitter. “I promise not to do this to Greenland!” he joked.
