Alveda King defends Trump against racist allegations after meeting with Baltimore pastors

President Trump has got a strong voice standing in his defense as Dr. Alveda King shot down accusations of racism against him.

Following a White House meeting with Trump and inner-city pastors on Monday, the niece of Rev. Martin Luther King, told Fox and Friends that the claims that the president is a “racist” are “absolutely fake.”

King dismissed criticism of the meeting between the conservative Coalition of African American Pastors and the president, saying it was not a staged photo opportunity in the wake of the controversy ignited by Trump when he criticized Rep. Elijah Cummings over neglecting his Maryland district.

“The meeting had been scheduled for several days and it was long before the tweet battle that’s going on and we were invited to continue our discussions with the president and to have an update and report about some things that had happened,” King told co-host Steve Doocy.

“The president spent a long time with us and the meeting was not a photo-op,” she said, noting the range of issues discussed such as the “sanctity of life and ending abortion.”

Doocy brought up the elephant in the room, noting that the meeting took place as many on the left are up in arms over Trump’s war of words with Cummings and others who claim to be all about civil rights while accusing the president of being a racist.

King gave a sharp reminder of Trump’s track record, noting how she shared with the president that she has photos of him with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton “when you gave them free rent for their business exploits” and supported them as they presented him with awards as well.

“But now they begin to hurl insults at the President,” she told Doocy, referring to the latest exchange as Trump slammed Sharpton as “a con man, a troublemaker, always looking for a score.”

“The president is simply saying, ‘Your communities need to be fixed,’” King continued, noting the suffering of individuals and families in the communities represented by Cummings.

Doocy asked King about her view after playing a video clip of politicians and analysts slamming the president in the last few days, calling him a racist for his attack on Baltimore and on its Congressman.

“All of that news is absolutely fake,” King responded.

“Even for instance, the President did mention — we were talking about Frederick Douglass, the Douglass Leadership Institute and everything, and President Trump’s support for the — all the work that Frederick Douglass did,” she added.

“He went on to just remind us that he cares about all Americans. You know, we all believe the same, that’s something the president has said, one race, one human race,” King said.

“He’s not a racist, absolutely is not,” she asserted, citing the “programs that he has moved forward, the higher job market” and criminal justice reform which are all “helping African-Americans.”

The president of the Coalition of African American Pastors, Bill Owens, pushed back on the idea that Trump is a racist following the White House meeting

“I find that hard to believe, considering the things he’s done for the black community,” he told reporters after the meeting which he said had about 20 people in attendance.

Owens contended that the “country needs healing. There’s so much division in America along racial lines.” But he also noted that he also sees “people pandering to black people, to get them on board with some of their agenda.”

“We have a president’s who’s listening,” King said following the White House event.

“The president is concerned about the whole nation. About everybody in the nation,” she said. “So I want us to remember, that we’ve been designed to be brothers and sisters. One member of the human race. Not separate races.”
