A former federal prosecutor finds it hard to believe that Robert Mueller was actually in charge of the investigation that bore his name.
Former Assistant United States Attorney Andrew McCarthy thinks, in fact, that it is “inconceivable,” telling “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy Thursday that he was convinced after watching hours of testimony following the former special counsel’s appearance before two House committees on Wednesday.

“I think this is the big takeaway from the hearing — it’s inconceivable that Robert Mueller ran this investigation,” McCarthy said.
“I think one thing that was evident in seven hours of testimony is that he only has a remote familiarity with his own report and with the investigation. He was actually staff-driven and that’s actually what the president has been saying all along,” the Fox News contributor added.
His remarks echoed his view Wednesday following Mueller’s appearance on Capitol Hill, speaking with a Fox News panel about the former special counsel’s disappointing performance.
“The story that will come out of this testimony is the fact that this was a staff-driven investigation,” McCcarthy said.
Baier: Your take on whether Mueller was really in charge of this investigation?
McCarthy: I think it’s inconceivable that Mueller was involved in this investigation.

“And President Trump, for all we say about the tweets, one thing he has hammered away again and again and again is about the political partisanship of the staff,” he added.
“And I’ve always thought that while they are highly skilled lawyers, and there is no doubt about their talent and their ability, Mueller was tin-eared in terms of assembling the kind of staff that he assembled for an investigation that was this politically fraught,” McCarthy contended. “And seeing now how he performs, I think you have to say that’s a lot more of an issue today than it was yesterday.”
Fox News anchor Brett Baier agreed, noting the presence of former deputy special counsel Aaron Zebley at the table with Mueller “after realizing, perhaps, that the former special counsel was not up to some of this questioning.”
“Well now, because it is clear this was a staff-driven operation, President Trump’s claim that these were partisans will certainly be looked at again, and I think he will be proven correct,” Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich added.
McCarthy also spoke with Townhall’s Guy Benson on the topic.

“I just think he didn’t know the investigation,” he told Benson on his Fox News radio program Wednesday.
“You really think there were other people calling the shots and pulling the strings?” Benson asked.
“I do, yes. I don’t think he could tell you what the OLC guidance was,” he replied.
He also noted that Mueller’s testimony Wednesday created a necessary shift in focus.
“Now I think the politics here shift…we’re going to move to the investigation of the investigators,” he said. “And what’s going to get a lot more scrutiny now, necessarily, is Mueller’s staff — because he clearly did not run this investigation.”
