Mueller PART 2: Nunes was ready for him, invokes Loch Ness Monster

Following multiple tense exchanges with lawmakers during a House Judiciary hearing on Wednesday morning, Robert Mueller’s feet got put to the fire once more in a Wednesday afternoon House Intelligence hearing.

In his opening remarks, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) called accusations of Trump’s presidential campaign colluding with Russia a “conspiracy theory.”

Nunes went on to compare the conspiracy theories of Trump obstructing justice and colluding to steal the 2016 presidential election to the Loch Ness monster.

“Like the Loch Ness monster, they [Democrats] insist it’s there even if no one can find it,” Nunes said.

The lawmaker did not stop there. He went on to accuse Democrats of actually being the ones that have colluded with Russia.

“There is collusion in plain site,” Nunes said, “collusion between Russia and the Democrat Party. The Democrats colluded with Russian sources to develop the Steele Dossier.”

Nunes later added, “The Democrats have already admitted, both in interviews and through their usual anonymous statements to reporters, that today’s hearing is not about getting information at all. They said they want to, quote, bring the Mueller report to life and create a television moment through ploys like having Mr. Mueller recite passages from his own report.”

Nunes also called the House Intelligence hearing “political theater” and said it is a “hail Mary” attempt by Democrats to sell their collusion fantasies to the American public.

Nunes later tore into Mueller early in the questioning process by highlighting the shortcomings of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by both Russia and the Trump campaign.

The Republican lawmaker first brought up a symposium that two Trump campaign officials — Carter Page and Stephen Miller — were invited to in June 2016, one month before the Mueller investigation officially kicked off. Nunes said Mueller’s investigators “failed” to interview the man who helped organize the event and invited the two officials.

I’m going to stay away from [those areas],” Mueller replied when asked about the failure to interview the man who invited the two officials to the event.

Nunes then brought up the Mueller investigation’s focus on Michael Flynn, who was accused at one point of having an affair with a woman who may have been a Russian spy. Nunes said Mueller’s team failed to investigate these accusations or their origins.

“I’m not going to get into those matters to which you refer,” Mueller replied, which was a typical response from the special counsel.

Nunes then brought up Joseph Misfud, the mysterious figure who arguably kicked off the Mueller investigation. Mueller had previously been questioned about Mifsud during the House Judiciary hearing by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). Mueller refused to answer any specific questions about Mifsud. He also refused to explain why Mifsud was not charged with making false statements to investigators despite doing so three times.

“Comey says Mifsud is a Russian agent. You do not. So do you stand by what’s in the report?” Nunes asked Mueller.

Mueller responded by saying he does stand by his report, which is about the boldest statement he’s managed to make while stumbling and stonewalling through these hearings.
