Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway leveled a scathing rebuke of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her “ignorant” call to abolish the Department of Homeland Security.
Conway spoke to reporters Monday about issues ranging from the upcoming testimony of Robert Mueller to President Trump’s criticism of four freshmen Democratic congresswomen, including Ocasio-Cortez who has called for DHS to be dismantled and a “9/11 style commission” to be set up to investigate White House border policies.
Speaking on Trump’s support of funding for the military, Conway told reporters in the White House driveway that this includes funding for DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, pointing to “one of your favorites up there in New York City” who is “maligning” the Customs and Border Protection agents.
“Saying that you’re going to abolish the entire Department of Homeland Security is as arrogant as it is ignorant. That’s about a quarter of a million men and women working there. It’s everything from Secret Service to Customs and Border Protection to FEMA to ICE,” she said.
“It just strikes me as naive,” Conway added, telling reporters she had no plans to be “afraid of her” as they are.
“If you’re going to be adoring and afraid of her, I’m not going to be,” she said.
“I refuse to stand here, outside of this building or anywhere else, and listen to people who’ve sworn an oath to the Constitution malign our great men and women in Customs and Border Protection and ICE, and I guarantee you that in any economic measure that this president signs, they will be protected and funded as well.”
Ocasio-Cortez slammed the “largely unaccountable” Homeland Security Department which she claimed is “part of a larger strategy” during comments at a town hall event in her home state over the weekend.

While Conway was speaking to reporters, Trump tweeted that the progressive congresswomen known as “the Squad” – which includes Ocasio-Cortez as well as Reps. Ilhan Omar D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. – are a “very racist group of troublemakers who are young, inexperienced, and not very smart.”

“They certainly are young and inexperienced. That doesn’t stop all of you from elevating them into the stratosphere and super-stardom,” Conway responded when asked about the president’s latest attack on the first-term lawmakers.
She slammed the women’s anti-Semitic rhetoric and the recent attempt by Omar to introduce a House resolution that compared boycotts of the Jewish state to boycotts of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Omar and Tlaib have been vocal supporters of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement – a Palestinian-led campaign linked to the terrorist group Hamas.
Conway cited an interview with White House Adviser Stephen Miller who said he was “profoundly outraged” by the remarks by Ocasio-Cortez describing detention centers at the U.S. southern border as “concentration camps.”
The far-left lawmakers “should stop attacking the good people in this country who they disagree with politically,” Conway added, slamming the lack of policy accomplishments by the freshman congresswomen, particularly Ocasio-Cortez.
“I don’t give them much mind,” Conway noted.
“The four of them, I’ve challenged them on policy again and again,” she said, calling out the “squad” that “doesn’t let squat get accepted,” as they stir trouble and get attention.
Earlier, the White House counselor also addressed questions about the upcoming appearance of former special counsel Robert Mueller who is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary and Intelligence panels on Wednesday.

“The president has zero concerns except that the taxpayers are on the hook again for this fantasy that never came true for the Democrats,” she said, adding that Mueller himself “has said that his report is his testimony, that ought to be respected and that ought to be accepted.”
“This idea that we need Bob Mueller to come to Congress to read from his report is an insult to the taxpayers, it’s an insult to Americans’ intelligence and it’s an insult to Director Mueller,” Conway said. “It’s an insult to democracy.”
“Why is Bob Mueller being hauled before Congress yet again?” she asked, calling it a disgrace and a waste of taxpayer money.
