‘BS meter is through the roof’: Rand Paul rips Jon Stewart for distorting his position on 9/11 funding bill

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., pushed back hard on criticism from Jon Stewart, the former host of “The Daily Show,” in regard to the 9/11 funding bill.

“It’s really disgusting,” Paul said of Stewart. “He pretended for years when he was on his comedy show to be somebody that could be both sides and see through the B.S. — now he is the B.S.”

Stewart, a staunch advocate for the 9/11 fund, blasted Paul for blocking a Senate bill.

Calling Paul’s concerns for the national debt and not having offsetting spending cuts “fiscal responsibility virtue signaling,” the comedian said the effort was “outrageous” given that Paul voted for the GOP tax reform bill, which he claimed “added hundreds of billions of dollars to our deficit.”

The Kentucky senator appeared Thursday on Fox News and ripped Stewart a new one for distorting his position.

“I know Jon Stewart, and Jon Stewart is sometimes funny and sometimes informed,” Paul said.

“In this case, he’s neither funny nor informed,” he added. “I’ve spent my entire Senate career putting forward ‘pay-fors’ for any time spending is expanded. I put forward a pay-for for the border funding bill.”

“He’s really not informed,” Paul said. “And his name-calling just sort of exposes him as a left-winger, part of the left-wing mob that really isn’t using its brain.”

He went on to say Stewart’s “B.S. meter is through the roof” for name-calling “when I’m asking for something reasonable.”

Paul drew the ire of many when he objected to an attempt by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand,
D-N.Y., to pass the funding bill by unanimous consent — the bill would reauthorize a 9/11 victim compensation fund through fiscal 2090.

After explaining that he worked to include a “pay-for” provision in the tax bill, that was later taken out, Paul continued ripping Stewart: “Jon Stewart doesn’t care about the truth. It’s all about ‘me-me-me Jon Stewart, look at me, I’m on TV.’”

Accusing Stewart, Gillibrand and “the left-wing mob” of lying, Paul accurately noted he has always pushed for offsetting spending cuts. He also stressed that the funding bill does not specify a cost other than whatever is necessary and this blank check is in effect for more than 70 years.

Calling Stewart a “guttersnipe,” he accused him of using his celebrity status to fool people while insisting that he is not blocking the bill, but trying to have a debate on deficits and off-setting spending.

“Jon Stewart can’t just have a free pass to lie to people, and think he’s a celebrity and think facts don’t matter,” the senator said. “Look, the left wing everyday is accusing [President] Donald Trump of not adhering to the facts, here is Jon Stewart making up his own facts so he can feel good about himself, and we shouldn’t let it stand.”
