There must not be a whole lot on Congress’ plate right now because Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s priority is to monitor a verbal feud between the president and several Democrat congresswomen.
“The House cannot allow the President’s characterization of immigrants to our country to stand. Our Republican colleagues must join us in condemning the President’s xenophobic tweets,” Pelosi wrote in a letter introducing a “forthcoming” resolution from Reps. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), who was born in Poland, Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and others.
“This weekend, the President went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about members of Congress,” Pelosi continued. “As I wrote on Twitter yesterday, I reject the President’s xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values.”
Trump has recently gone after Dem representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar.
The president tweeted that the Dems should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
During a Monday appearance on “The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino,” Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt said Pelosi’s resolution is meant to “trap Republicans.”

Perino brought up several polls during the segment, one of which showed that public support is mostly behind capitalism and mostly against socialism. With the freshman four openly friendly to socialism and highly critical of capitalism, Perino theorized that Republicans see a “shot to take back the House” thanks to out-of-touch Democrats like AOC and Omar.
In a Monday afternoon press conference, Trump doubled down on his remarks about the four lawmakers.
“I’m watching them, all they do is complain,” Trump said in defense of his original comments. “All I’m saying, if they want to leave, they can leave.”
He also suggested that the women “hate our country … with a passion.” He added that Omar hates “Israel” and “Jews.”
Pelosi previously condemned Trump’s comments about the Dem representatives — despite feuding with the four women herself — and tweeted, “When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ‘Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power.”
She then added, “I reject @realDonaldTrump’s xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. Stop the raids – #FamiliesBelongTogether!”

Trump continued his criticism of the freshman four in a series of Monday morning tweets.
“If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.” he wrote.
The president then shared a quote from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) defending his comments and calling the freshman four “communists.”
