President Donald Trump’s no-holds-barred Twitter attack Sunday morning against this year’s radical Democrat freshmen managed to achieve the impossible.
After days of bickering among themselves, congressional Democrats seemingly united as one Sunday afternoon and aimed their combined fury at the president.
Leading this new “squad” of sorts was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who only days earlier had been squabbling with the original “squad” and its four troublemakers — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley.
In a series a tweets posted about two hours after the president’s attack, the speaker rushed to the defense of the “squad” and accused Trump of wanting to make “America white again.”
When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to “Make America Great Again” has always been about making America white again.
Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power. https://t.co/ODqqHneyES

I reject @realDonaldTrump’s xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. Stop the raids – #FamiliesBelongTogether!

That was a shocking turnaround, given as it’d only been a few days since AOC suggested that the speaker’s a racist — and less than 24 hours since the “squad” en masse blasted Pelosi at the Netroots Nation conference in Philadelphia.
Speaking of AOC, she too fired back against Trump early Sunday afternoon.
Look:
Mr. President, the country I “come from,” & the country we all swear to, is the United States.
But given how you’ve destroyed our border with inhumane camps, all at a benefit to you & the corps who profit off them, you are absolutely right about the corruption laid at your feet. https://t.co/HLKQCotR8T
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 14, 2019
You are angry because you don’t believe in an America where I represent New York 14, where the good people of Minnesota elected @IlhanMN, where @RashidaTlaib fights for Michigan families, where @AyannaPressley champions little girls in Boston.

You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.
You won’t accept a nation that sees healthcare as a right or education as a #1 priority, especially where we’re the ones fighting for it.
Yet here we are.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 14, 2019
But you know what’s the rub of it all, Mr. President?
On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either.
You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 14, 2019
What remains to be seen is whether she and her peers will issue a thank you tweet to Pelosi. If they choose to ignore her defending them, that could strain their relationship again.
As of around 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon, neither Omar nor Pressley had responded yet to the president’s attack. Tlaib did however post a tweet about the president two hours after he’d sent his tweet, but it’s unclear whether her tweet references his tweet or just him in general.
Look:
Want a response to a lawless & complete failure of a President?
He is the crisis.
His dangerous ideology is the crisis.
He needs to be impeached.— Rashida Tlaib (@RashidaTlaib) July 14, 2019
Back to the original tweet, the president had written a scathing rant complaining about how the “squad” of “Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” spend a lot of time “viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”
Angered by this, the president suggested that the “squad members” should “go back and help fix” their own countries …
While the tweet was received positively by some in his base, others felt as if it was the mistake of a lifetime. For one, only one member of the “squad,” Omar, was actually born outside the U.S.
AOC was born in New York City, Tlaib was born in Detroit and Pressley was born in Cincinnati. That Trump would falsely accuse the three of them of being foreign-born struck many as unfortunate, since it paved the way for Democrats to again argue that he’s a racist.
Except this time the argument seems more valid, even some centrists and conservatives claim:
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”@AOC @RashidaTlaib @AyannaPressley were all born in the United States.
Not that POTUS statement would be ok if they weren’t born here but I wanted to point that fact out. pic.twitter.com/h76S9cO1q7

Ayanna Pressley isn’t an immigrant, or the daughter of immigrants, or the granddaughter of immigrants. She’s just black. https://t.co/6T4h1oJz5A

What absolute idiocy. This is a gift to AOC, Omar, and all Democrats. Anyone who thinks Trump is deploying some brilliant strategy, rather than just mouthing off like a child constantly, needs to have their head examined. People who cheer this crap on are begging to lose in 2020. https://t.co/OKWQEQUVAz

Take the Judge Curiel moment, mix in “shithole” countries, sprinkle in a few Tucker monologues, and you’ve got this miserable, hateful stew. But the truly depressing part will be the inevitable GOP gaslighting, rationalizations, and minimizations in his defense. https://t.co/AUW9hQXtEp

To be fair to the president, all four “squad” members do greatly act like they hate America. They complain incessantly about its government and policies, plot daily against its sovereignty and sometimes even side with its enemies.
