On Friday, after Vice President Mike Pence toured a pair of migrant detention center in Donna and McAllen, Texas, CNN reporter Pamela Brown interviewed him and her subsequent network report focused on the crowded conditions of the men’s facility. Her clear intent was to twist her story in order to place blame for packed temporary facilities on the administration.
But in a series of tweets afterward, the Vice President fired back, with the declaration, “CNN is so dishonest.”
“Today we took reporters to a detention facility on the border for families and children and all told us they were being treated well,” Pence continued in his tweets. “These men were in a temporary holding area because Democrats in Congress have refused to fund additional bed space.
“Rather than broadcast the full story, showing the compassionate care the American people are providing to vulnerable families, tonight CNN only played video of men in the temporary facility and didn’t play any footage of the family facility at all… ignoring the excellent care being provided to families and children.
“Our great CBP agents deserve better and the American people deserve the whole story from CNN!” Pence concluded.

The crisis at our southern border is not a “manufactured crisis”, it is real and is overwhelming our system. To show this, we also visited an overcrowded facility for adult men, many of whom have been arrested multiple times.

In Pence’s CNN interview, Brown pressed him to comment on the overcrowding at the temporary men’s facility. “This is tough stuff,” he said. “I was not surprised by what I saw … I knew we’d see a system that was overwhelmed.”
The entire Pence interview segment on CNN included split-screen footage of men behind a chain link fence, without mentioning that the men’s facility houses many who are deemed dangerous. The network showed no imagery from the family facility that was also part of the tour.
Repeatedly pressured by the reporter to account for the purported bad conditions in the men’s detention center, the Vice President said: “It’s the reason we demanded that Congress provide $4.6 billion in additional support to customs and border protection. Look, for the last six months, Democrats in Congress have been saying this is a manufactured crisis, but as you saw firsthand today, here at McAllen station where our cells are overflowing and now that temporary facility you just saw had to be established. And then the first facility that we saw where nearly 1,000 families with children are being detained ought to be a very clear message to every American the time for action is now and the time for Congress to act to end the flow of families that are coming north from Central America to our border is now.”
“We can’t keep people in a cell beyond what the rules and regulations allow for,” Pence continued. “But everyone, even in that temporary facility, Pamela, is getting three meals a day, health care, they are getting hygiene, and the Customs and Border Protection is doing their level best in an overcrowded environment to address this issue.
“But Congress has got to act to make it possible for us to reduce the numbers of people coming into our country illegally and that’s going to require us to change the loopholes, reform our asylum laws. I hope two things today, Pamela. I hope first and foremost that we put to the lie this slander against Customs and Border Protection.
“I mean, people saying that the families and children are being held in concentration camps is an outrage,” he continued. “The Nazis killed people. Our Customs and Border Protection as you heard today are saving lives every day and you saw the profound compassionate care for those families and children in the detention facility today.
“The other thing is I hope we also move past this rhetoric about a manufactured crisis. The President wanted me to come down here today to look how families are being treated but also to be able to show the American people that this system is overwhelmed, it’s overcrowded, and Congress has got to step up to end this crisis of illegal immigration at our southern border.”

Of course, CNN was not interested in talking about solutions. Blame and political gamesmanship are the M.O. for the fake news network. So in the end of her report, Brown twisted her conclusion to seem that Pence was dodging blame for the border crisis.
