Last Sunday morning on “Fox & Friends,” frequent co-host Ed Henry tearfully announced that he’d be departing the show on medical leave for a short while to do a loved one a favor of sorts.
That favor involved donating a part of his liver to help his sister, Colleen, who, he explained, “has been bravely battling degenerative liver disease over the last few years.”
Well, it’s been about a week since that stunning announcement, and the diagnosis is in: Prognosis POSITIVE!
During a surprise phone-in Saturday morning to his colleagues on “Fox & Friends,” he revealed that his vitals “are good” and that the surgery was a success.

“I believe we have Ed on the phone,” co-host Jedediah Bila said as the discussion with Henry began. “Are you there?”
“Yeah, good morning,” her bedridden colleague replied.
“Hi, Ed!” Bila continued. “We are is so excited to see you in recovery. I can’t believe it, you look amazing, and I already saw you eat an English muffin with some peanut butter and banana. You’re living large over there!’

“Yeah, that’s the Elvis menu, I guess, people were teasing me, because he liked peanut butter and bananas,” Henry cheerfully replied. “But that’s what they gave me, and you need a little protein, a little fruit. But I’m telling you, we feel great.”
“My vitals are good. I got out of the ICU yesterday. I’ve still got some aches and pains, but it’s really not a big deal because it’s – we’ve succeeded in victory, I think, in winning our goal, which is to get my sister healthy.”
He added that his sister’s plight isn’t over yet — that “there’s going to be a long road ahead” — but made it a point to highlight the incredible nature of her stunning recovery.
“She’s now, just in the last few hours, updating she got out of the main ICU herself, which is remarkable since the operation was only Tuesday,” he said. “This was a major, major operation for each of us, but longer and harder for her, and she’s now in a kind-of, smaller intensive-care area and is headed soon to a private room like I am.”
“And the best thing is the surgeon, we each had our own surgeons, and mine was terrific and hers was as well, and her surgeon said that as soon as he got the 30 percent of my liver and put it in her, it immediately started working, immediately. It’s just a miracle, an absolute miracle.”
Bila replied by pointing out that his recovery appears to be pretty impressive itself.
“One thing that’s amazing is that we had talked about the possibility on the show, when we did the preliminary coverage, that you might not be in a condition to get up and check on her and go see how she’s doing,” she said. “It looks like it worked out that you were well enough that you were able to go and make sure she was okay.”
True!
“Yeah, you know, the first morning, Wednesday I was still in a haze and they said, do you want to get up?” Henry said in response. “The doctors and nurses encouraged me, said you’ve really got to get going because you feel like you got hit by a truck, quite literally.”
“I said, yeah, everyone’s been telling me you’ve got to get going, so I got up, but I felt a little dizzy, my blood pressure went down, and I was like, whoa, is this the right thing to do? But they said we want you to go visit your sister. So I got up, went for a walk and then, you know, we toasted. And since we can’t have alcohol, we had apple juice.”
Nothing wrong with that.
Co-host Griff Jenkins then joined the discussion to remind Henry of how much of a hero he happens to be not only to his colleagues at FNC, but to millions across the country.
“You are such a hero to not just us, but hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of Americans out there,” he said, before asking about what the next steps in this battle against Colleen’s liver disease will be.
“I hope to be out of the hospital in a couple of days,” Henry replied. “Think it’s going to be longer for her, obviously. She has a much bigger incision than I do because she had to have her old liver that was experiencing this degenerative disease taken out, so she has this L incision. I just have a line in the middle of my belly.”
“But what I want to say more than anything is, yeah, she has a long road ahead, but she already has her color back. Because of the liver disease, she was kind of yellow and jaundiced, and everybody who has come to visit her says she’s getting her color back. Like I say, it’s only a few days. That’s a miracle as well.”
“And what I really want to say more than anything is all of you there on the couch … and the team … have been my guardian angels and leading me through this. Bottom line is our viewers, I literally had no idea last Sunday when I was about to tell people about this. I thought, hey, I’ll get this out of the way, I’ve got to go away for a while. They’re not letting me go away. Everybody’s tweeting me, texting me. I’m trying to respond. I had to turn my phone off for a couple of days. I mean, the prayers that we’re receiving, I can’t thank everyone personally, I want to thank everybody now. You’ve been amazing. I totally underestimated the outpouring, it’s been amazing, and my family can’t thank you enough.”
