Speaking to reporters on Friday, the president doubled down on the former Wisconsin Republican after already having slammed him in a series of tweets Thursday night.

“Paul Ryan was not a talent. He wasn’t a leader,” Trump said at the White House Friday, criticizing the former House Speaker for not going after Democrats more aggressively.
“He wouldn’t give subpoenas, whereas Nancy Pelosi hands them out like they’re cookies,” he said, rolling out the laundry list of failures.
“Paul Ryan was a lame duck for a long time as Speaker. He was unable to raise money. He lost control of the House. The only success Paul Ryan had was the time that he was with me because we had taxes cut. I got regulation cuts, I did that mostly without him,” Trump said.
His comments came amid the release of excerpts from journalist Tim Alberta’s new book, “American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump.”
Ryan described Trump in the book as uneducated about the government and said he effectively retired from Congress in order to avoid dealing with the president.
“I told myself I gotta have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right,” Ryan was quoted as saying by Alberta. “Because I’m telling you, he didn’t know anything about government . . . I wanted to scold him all the time.”

“For Paul Ryan to be complaining is pretty amazing,” Trump told reporters. “So for him to be going out and opening his mouth is pretty incredible. But maybe he gets paid for that. Who knows? Maybe he gets paid for that.”
The president’s remarks followed a series of scathing tweets where he slammed the former lawmaker who retired in January for his “poor leadership.”
Trump ripped Ryan “whose record of achievement was atrocious,” calling him a “long-running lame duck failure.”
Paul Ryan, the failed V.P. candidate & former Speaker of the House, whose record of achievement was atrocious (except during my first two years as President), ultimately became a long running lame duck failure, leaving his Party in the lurch both as a fundraiser & leader……

Ryan left Congress “because he didn’t know how to Win,” Trump added. noting the time Ryan was met with boos when he took the stage in Wisconsin.
….When Mitt chose Paul I told people that’s the end of that Presidential run. He quit Congress because he didn’t know how to Win. They gave me standing O’s in the Great State of Wisconsin, & booed him off the stage. He promised me the Wall, & failed (happening anyway!)……

Trump further criticized Ryan for squandering an opportunity with the GOP majority in the House, not going after Democrats “like they go after us.”
“Couldn’t get him out of Congress fast enough!” Trump wrote.
….He had the Majority & blew it away with his poor leadership and bad timing. Never knew how to go after the Dems like they go after us. Couldn’t get him out of Congress fast enough!

The contentious relationship between the two stemmed from before Trump was even nominated, with Ryan hesitating to endorse then-candidate Trump even though the GOP nomination seemed secure. Ryan announced his retirement last April, leaving many to blame him for fleeing the scene as Republicans ended up losing the majority in the House.
