A life-sized wooden carving depicting first lady Melania Trump in the powder blue outfit she wore to her husband’s inauguration is prompting a lot of petty jeers from haters, but the artist behind the piece said it’s no laughing matter.
The statue was unveiled Friday in Mrs. Trump’s native Slovenia and Brad Downey, the designer who commissioned the artwork, told The Washington Post it’s a serious piece of work.
“People might laugh at the aesthetics of the monument, but the context plays a very important role,” Downey said. “This is not the random positioning of a monument. People may laugh, but the context still resonates.”

The sculptor, Ales “Maxi” Zupevc, is described by the newspaper as a blue-collar pipe layer and amateur woodworker who grew up not far from the first lady’s hometown of Sevnica.
Downey was intent on finding an artist born in the same town and at the same time as Mrs. Trump, which highlights how two lives rooted in the same place can diverge so drastically, The Post reported.
But for anti-Trump cabal, it just serves as another reason to get their hate on — not that they need a reason. The manner in which Mrs. Trump is treated by the left in this country is an absolute disgrace.
Berlin-based curator Lukas Feireiss, who is familiar with Downey’s art, pointed to the ambiguity of the carving as its beauty.
“I think that’s the beauty of it, that nobody can answer the question: Is it serious? Is it a joke?” Feireiss told The Post. “That ambiguity is the strength of his work, the fact that we can’t really figure it out. That’s always, to me at least, that’s always the power of it.”
In a short documentary produced by Downey, Zupevc said he had no formal training with wood and that this was the first time he carved a statue of a full human figure — he was proud of the finished product.
Zupevc carved the statue with a chain saw, which explains the big, block-ish look — a linden tree was cut down on the banks of the Sava River, 5 miles or so outside of Trump’s hometown.

He also said he liked Melania Trump, describing her as “modest,” a “simple woman.”
“But let’s face it,” Zupevc said. “She owns half of America, while I have nothing.”
And while the first lady’s office has not commented on the statue, Zupevc is hopeful that she likes it.
“She might come and see the thing,” he said in the documentary. “She might like it.”
As for the hate, it flowed unchecked for Mrs. Trump, who has proven to be a gracious first lady, leading with class and dignity, which is more than can be said for the left’s unhealthy, toxic resistance to her husband’s presidency:
Here’s a sampling of results from Twitter:
She and her husband should be grateful the artist, at least, clothed her.

In fairness, it’s probably what she looked like before all of the cosmetic surgery

It’s just like her–it stands still, says nothing, does nothing and everyone gives it attention.

Gotta hand it to the sculptor. It’s much more animated than the original.
