When far-left CNN commentator Don Lemon questioned whether Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris qualifies as “African American,” nobody noticed.
But the moment a random black conservative suggested the same thing on Twitter and President Donald Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. retweeted that suggestion, all hell broke loose and the president’s son was branded as a racist.
Speaking Tuesday evening on Fox News about this dichotomy, host Tucker Carlson rehashed the events from beginning to end and then noted the stunning repugnancy of it all.

“Joe Biden’s strongest constituency? Black voters. Kamala Harris’s base, meanwhile, young, well-educated white liberals. Affluent white voters,” he began.
“In fact, many black voters appear skeptical of Kamala Harris. One of them recently tweeted that Kamala’s life story doesn’t bear much resemblance to that of most African Americans. Her parents were from India and Jamaica.”
That tweet was posted by Ali Alexander, a proud black conservative. The only difference between his argument and the one posited by Lemon five months ago was that Alexander questioned whether Harris qualifies as “American black,” whereas Lemon questioned whether she qualifies as “African American.” To be clear, it was the same argument, semantically speaking.
Look:

“Donald Trump Jr. retweeted that observation, and for that, CNN denounced him as a terrifying racist,” Carlson continued Tuesday, after which he played a montage of far-left hosts and commentators on CNN and MSNBC excoriating the president’s son for a simple retweet.
He then dovetailed back to Lemon.
“Now this tape has been floating around Washington, and Don Lemon has been calling other anchors even on other channels and asking them not to replay it because he’s embarrassed of it,” he said. “But we think you have a right to see it and decide for yourself if Don Lemon is an anti-black racist.”
“All she has to do is say, ‘I’m black but I’m not African American.’ That’s it. … Jamaica is not America,” the CNN host could be heard saying in the clip.
“Here’s Don Lemon telling you that Kamala Harris is not an African-American,” Carlson said in reaction to Lemon’s rhetoric. “And yet that’s not racist because Don Lemon is a democratic voter. That’s the logic of identity politics.”
“Democrats think they’re going to get elected on that. They don’t seem to understand the rest of the country finds it boring and stupid and repugnant.”
Including Rob Smith, a black, gay Army veteran and #WalkAway/#Blexit participant.
“What is going on in the left now right is they’re trying to twist any sort of question about Kamala Harris’s lineage or where she came from into some sort of birther-styled attack, which I think is garbage,” he said to Carlson.
“Kamala Harris is the child of a Jamaican father and Indian mother. Now, she was born in America to two immigrant parents. She’s a black American, but she’s not exactly an African American, right? And what she does … is she tries to muddy the waters. When she says that she’s a child of busing, she tries to muddy the waters to pretend as if she comes from the Jim Crow lineage or the lineage of slaves, which she does not come from.”
Even her own father has admitted as much. In an op-ed for Jamaica Global published in January, he revealed the family’s slave-owning roots.

“My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (née Christiana Brown, descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown’s Town) and to my maternal grandmother Miss Iris (née Iris Finegan, farmer and educator, from Aenon Town and Inverness, ancestry unknown to me),” he wrote.
Yet Harris would have you believe she’s the descendant of slaves. Meanwhile, some of those who’ve had the temerity to question the legitimacy of her purported heritage have falsely been branded as racist.
“That’s the conversation people were having,” Smith continued. “It was not racist when Don Lemon had it on CNN, and it’s not racist for me or other black voters to have it, and it certainly wasn’t racist for Donald Trump Jr. to ask the question. I think that idea is completely absurd.”
Carlson then finished up the discussion by pointing out that the only reason Harris’s racial background is relevant is because she herself had brought it up.
“Kamala Harris is the one that injected this conversation, imposed it on the rest of the country. Am I wrong for not caring who her parents are?” He asked.
“No. You’re not wrong for not caring at all,” Smith replied.
