‘Gotta love the strategy’: Beto O’Rourke campaigns for POTUS … in Mexico!

Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke apparently thinks one way to campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination is to travel to Mexico.

The presidential candidate’s political pandering led him over the southwestern border to Mexico on Sunday so he could speak to those seeking to come to the U.S. – many illegally – and come up with a way to help them.

Rather than speak to Border Patrol agents or residents in U.S. cities along the southern border affected by the influx of illegal immigrants, O’Rourke took his campaign to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico to meet with so-called asylum seekers and what his campaign described as “individuals and families directly impacted by Donald Trump’s cruel and inhumane policies.”

Across the Rio Grande River from O’Rourke’s hometown of El Paso, Texas, the Democratic 2020 hopeful spoke in Spanish to those gathered in a restaurant before heading to a shelter, the Associated Press reported.

“We hope, by sharing these stories, that the conscience of our country is awoken right now, and the need to change the policies that we have in place” becomes apparent, O’Rourke said in a livestream of the event on his Facebook page.

Migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala told O’Rourke at the Catholic church-run shelter about being denied entry into the U.S., waiting while their asylum claims were being processed in the Mexican border city while fearing being sent back to their home countries.

O’Rourke pointed a finger at “the Trump administration’s unlawful ‘Remain in Mexico’ program” for their plight, echoing remarks he made on “Face the Nation” Sunday.

“This inhumane policy is causing suffering and death,” O’Rourke said. “Going to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and meeting with these asylum seekers is a great way for the American public to know what is being done in our name right now.”

His campaign noted that a goal of the trip was to “shed light on the desperate circumstances those who are seeking asylum and refuge are fleeing, and the conditions these families and individuals are forced to endure when they’ve been turned away from our borders.”

O’Rourke’s visit came after Julian Castro called out his fellow Texan during Wednesday’s first presidential primary debate in Miami.

“If you did your homework on this issue, you would know that we should be repealing this section [of law],” the former Obama administration Housing and Urban Development secretary and mayor of San Antonio, said, referring to O’Rourke’s unwillingness to decriminalize illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border.

O’Rourke also staged a “Rally for the Children” event outside of the Border Patrol Station in Clint, Texas on Sunday.

The facility, near El Paso, was visited by Castro on Saturday amid reports immigrant children brought to the U.S. illegally have not had access to soap, toothbrushes and other basic amenities.

O’Rourke’s move to take his campaign across the border and focus on people who are not even living in the U.S., let alone being American citizens, was met with plenty of backlash on Twitter.
